I know there are at least 20 threads in which I have said this. These scales are not that accurate. Some states allow some tolerance. Some even allow 2 thousand pounds. Some will hold a driver to that 80,000 total give you some leeway on an axle/tandem as long as you are under that total. I have also said many times, go inside and ask. I am not saying do this while getting an overweight ticket. Most of the time these allowances are made because these scales can get really wonky over time. I would not call the OP "lucky", the OP simply hit a scale master that followed state policy on overweight.

It's interesting in that link you find this statement!

"Note: All of the maximum weights shown above already include the 10 percent scale tolerance"

Many states do allow up to 10%. Most will get tough on the 80,000 but will give a bit on the tandems. I do find it is necessary to stress two points here to avoid a font war. First, not every state allows you to do this, second, in the ones that do they leave it up to the scale master.

I picked up a load in PA and didn't get a chance to hit a CAT, but I figured since it was 0130, the scale I was going to pass would be closed. Wrong. They weighed me, sat me there for awhile, then sent me on my way. When I finally got to a CAT, I was 700lbs over on my drives. Not huge, but they didn't fuss about it.

Maryland will give you 1000 lbs on an axle on a non-interstate hwy, if you’re otherwise under 80K.

Sometimes they give you a pass. I was unknowingly 1800 over gross coming into Maryland from VA (some bridge from VA anyway. Don't remember) and the guy had me slide my axles before going over the bridge. I realized later what a break I got when I weighed at Petro bordentown.

Yeah. Ohio can be scale Nazis. That's the only state I've gotten a ticket for speeding on a permit. And I was clocked at 59. Down a hill.

It can happen. Ran through 3 scales (rolling weigh) in CA at 3600 over in the drives, although I think I was still under legal gross weight.

Maybe they just liked the "cut of your jib"? :)
