I sent this question to my safety dept, and to date, have not gotten an answer

you are driving up towards a scale house, and traffic going on to the scale is backed up onto the road
there are no signs indicating whether to use the shoulder or bypass the scale

    what do you do?

    run the scale? possible ticket
sit on the shoulder? possible ticket
sit on the road, in line? (possible legal, but also the dumbest and most unsafe)

It depends on the state. I know in MI you don't get on the berm. It's been a long time but a driver did that once when the scales was backed up, got hit and got suied by the idiot that hit him!

I used to run the scales when they got back out onto the road as I have SEEN death from this. Remember, that was just me and my butt, LOL, not giving you advice. I did it and did not care WHAT anyone said...never, in 12.5 years, got pulled over for it and IF I did, it would have been in court and I would have taken it all the way. Sitting on the shoulder or ESPECIALLY in the actual moving lane is DANGEROUS and I refused to kill anyone. I saw a really nasty mess once because of that...and I REFUSED to do it myself. I would rather be in court, than looking at the family I killed for sitting in the road. Like I said, that is just my opinion!

Run the scales. That is is the safest choice to make.I`m not sitting in the road, not stopping on the shoulder and will seek legal counsel if ticketed for running them.(used to run alot of them "back in the day",but thats another story.)

I was backed out onto the road at a scale, sitting on a bridge at the bottom of a hill, barely moving, and one truck behind me. I see in my mirror some nut come flying down the hill toward us. I had seen a very bad wreck at that same place two weeks earlier because of trucks being backed up where a driver had to be cut out of the cab .

I mashed on it, pulled into the empty middle lane and took off, just in case the other truck could not stop.

Wouldn't you know the DMV was in a car behind the truck that was behind me. He followed me past the scale and stopped me. He asked why I took off after almost stopping. I asked him if he had seen the truck coming down the hill, for I did, and I was not going to get into a wreck like the one here two weeks ago.

He thought about it a minute and told me to go on. I would have fought that ticket.

KY scales managed to back up traffic in 2 lanes last week. Center and right lane, as a convoy of utility workers tried to enter the scale on I-65 NB from the center lane....I fell into the left lane, and ran the scale.

As many of the posters before me have stated, it depends on the state you're in. And even then, it's a judgement call.

I can pay a ticket, much easier than I can hit a reset button on my life, or anyone elses.

I take it they got that construction done down in Franklin, KY. Back when they was working on it and trucks were to use left lane only they still had the scales open and you had to cross over the right lane to enter the scales. It was funny they was doing this being they was ticketing guys for driving in the right lane. I never stopped at them and luckily never got pulled over.

I went on by no matter what state it was.... I am not sitting on the shoulder nor am I sitting on the road... I as well have seen death cause of this.. I was in Texas and no more then seconds after the crash (I seen parts flying)... Another truck hit the back of another truck because he wasn't expecting the scale to be backed up on the road.. The man died in that crash, very easy to see that nobody could of made it threw that crash when I went by going the opposite direction...
