scales.... who pays?

You are confusing private scale with state scales on the interstate. When you get a "scale ticket" you go to a truck stop and weigh your truck to see if you are over on your gross or any perticular axles. You pay a fee and go on down the road. If you get pulled in a scale on the road (chicken coupe) and get verweight you then get a a big fat overweight fine(or overweight ticket) i see how you could get confused.

COmpanies USUALLY pay for private scaling after you load.

If you get an overweight ticket from the state then it's usually yours to pay since it is your responsibility to make sure your load is legal (by checking it on a private scale before you head down the road)

 

So my husband just got a job with western express. They pay for the scale ticket but if he has to get cash with the employee card the atm has a $5 fee. So he’ll pay the $5 with the card and they’ll pay for the $13 ticket when he sends photo of receipt but he doesn’t get refunded for the $5 atm fee. He’s losing money for this company. Is this legal? What can he do? His DM isn’t #### btw.

 

Why does he have to withdraw cash with the employee card to pay for it?
If he can use an ATM for the cash, the card should work to pay for the scale ticket at the fuel desk. No fee that way.

And if he is scanning in the receipt to get paid back, and it is a CAT scale he is using, CAT has a phone app that makes things very easy.
He can use the app to charge his personal account, go in and get the ticket, then scan in the ticket to get paid back. No extra fee.

And even if all that doesn't work...
Maybe he should just have enough cash on hand to pay the scale ticket. No fee that way either.

We do shop at Walmart, and there is no fee for taking some cash out with the purchase.

 

He has to pull cash out because some of the weight stations don’t accept cards.

never saw a truck stop not take a credit card for a scale.

 

Some really good advice in this thread. Try to carry some cash. Another point is never to discuss what you are hauling with anybody NOT EVEN another driver in your company. Don't talk about what you just hauled or are about to load. I remember many years ago eating a burger at the Spaceway Truck Stop near Meridian Miss listening to some kid rattling on about his "high value load". Reminded me so much of a guy at the Atlanta Petro that paid his bill with what looked like a fat money clip. This is a subject I am not very diplomatic about. I told that guy he was a dang fool and to remember me when he woke up after being clubbed during a hijack. His eyes became as large as quarters and the Walmart Drivers close to us were both laughing at him. Folks DO NOT talk about your loads or where you have been or going.

 

The company should be responsible for scale charges requested as part of a shipment but some won't always pay for CAT scales.

Overweight citations should be the carrier's responsibility; but some used to drag it out and if the driver was caught on the commonwealth of Virginia's scale again he got a set of bracelets to wear until the carrier paid....seen it happen a few times, long ago.
