So tell me again about making the 5th wheel legal on my smooth bore tanker?
While your at it, introduce me to the cop that'll write a ticket for overweight drives with a tanker. Then i want too meet the cop who will ticket me for overweight trailer tandems. -
As for the weight where its sits on the trailer. Thats not the point of sliding the 5th wheel. The point is moving the weight on the frame compared to where the transfer point is in the wheelbase to adjust it from the steer to the drives. The thing is the DOT scales them once the liquid stops moving so its just like scaling a dead load. Ever rolled across the scale and got the stop light then had to sit there tell the load stopped?? It happends to me all the time as we haul product that is 11 pounds per gallon at minimum and the weight in motion here in Washington is almost never flat and our tanks are never more then 2/3 full give it lots of room to run. The tanks are double conical and 45-50 foot long some single, some double compartment. Some 18" kingpin setting some 48" kingpin settings on the old trailers.
-
On our single compartment trailers that are rear discharge. So the tank slopes to the back we load tell the trailer tamdems are just under legal then depending on where the 5th wheel is at we may have to slide to get the tractor axles legal.
Again its all weighted when the load is dead not live.
So it has to be loaded or unloaded to make weight. Just like to door slammers or skateboarders. -
This one is closer to you set up Im guessing. This one scaled for me at ruffly 81,000 with 33,500-33,800 on the trailer but because of my lift axle, and pneumatic blower I couldnt scale legal. But the truck that delivered it was a 3 axle tractor and scaled around 78,000 with the same tandem weight and 5th wheel in a different location then mine.

Ok, you guys do it your way, we'll continue to load till 45k, sign the bills and were gone. I rode with my 5th wheel slid all the way to the rear on a mack. Crossed many scales, never has anyone ever said a word to me. Our product was 10.17 pounds per gallon. Loaded till about two feet below dome.

When I run the same trailer or style of trailer all the time its great too but when you have 5 loads in 5 different trailers in a week it makes ya think way to much. Lol
-
BTW I haul hoppers, tankers, and dry bulk tankers all with the same tractor so thats why we have such long slides on them.
