depending what do you consider as normal , here many drivers drive trucks as much as they can go so add HP they use same throttle so it is not problem to reach 40L or about 20% more than normal trucks (33L), which could also be more economic with more reasonable head in really normal driving way V8 vs. 6cil SCR use about 1L more or even less EDIT: v8 mostly suffer from light loads-roads and empty runs in more difficult condition v8 can use even less fuel than 6cil SCR my friend take a lot of trucks with his very moderate driving stile (82kmh, using gravity releasing throttle before top of hill ....) cruising over mountains to south on highway so far r500 have lowest fuel consumption of all trucks , including MB 440 v6 e5, man 440 e5, volvo 440e5 460eev+e6, renault e5 460,daf 460 ate+e6 , scania 440 e6,490e6 and many more he have careful data about fuel speed usage of fuel in each part of trip, and r500 get 3-8% better results than any other truck always fully loaded r500 get 33.6L which is 7mpg many drivers get around 6mpg or slightly lower, largest single incline on route is 8km(5mille) 8%
many customers are buying v8 in forest applications for example, in germany 60% of all scania timber trucks are v8 because those engines have very good torque from idle to 1000rpm much higher value than inline engines torque does not rise sharply but flat this way you get better traction and it is much easier to start you can do that with very little throttle on this way save rest of driveline from shocks and , i dont know how to explain this i hope it is clear edit: also v8 have smaller angle between cilinders which again make traction better , now 730 and e6 (520,580 and 730) have common rail and vgt turbo on this way they can get more different engine response on throttle , in offroad mode on gearbox engine get soft response to help with traction
first streamline 730 here i dont like this inox parts on it, but here everyone put this italian stuff , they chose high bumper and high tires because truck haul wood and go offroad and on ferry, their earlier 3bought last summer got low tires and low bumper , they got problems even with full air suspension
I agree, the v8 lasts longer than the truck in some cases especially in tough regions, some of these trucks never see a freeway, I would say 90% of all heavy haul trucks in Ireland are Scania v8, the r620 I drove is 7 years old and with the lowbed trailer weighs 80,000lbs empty, it has around 750,000kms on the clock and the only trouble with it has been a cracked cross member on the chassis ( from being constantly overloaded, sometimes by 90,000lbs), manifold gaskets and a splicer on the rear drive shaft, other than that it's just been routine maintenance . haha true, the English are a nation of complainers (no offence to my English friends but ye just are) Jack Dee a famous English comedian had a joke about this , he said ' it was lucky that it was the Americans got to the moon first..with Armstrongs great one giant step speech, had it been the English the speech would have been more like; "the f@#%ing job we had getting 'ere"
Theres more talk now of VW buying the rest of the shares then having common parts with MAN, gawd I think that's the end of Scania , it'll be just another multinational doing things as cheap as possible
Not sure, I'm a little behind on it, busy as hell, they will try reject it, Scania view themselves as a unique product and I've read they are very upset with the prospect of sharing man parts and as anybody that has run maxxforce engines will know why
There are 2 bigger shareholders that have rejected the bid. They want Scania to stay independent. But they will probably not be enough to stop VW to get over 90%. But it's also some big guys on Scania it self that have started to buy shares in a rapid pace in a try to stop VW. So far even tough VW has over 60% of the shares the only thing they have done together is buying steel.
