Anyone know of a scanner where I can do injector cut out tests at home? I also don't want to spend a ton of money if possible. Maybe like under 500 if that is even available? It could be old, new, used. I don't even care if it only works for an N14. If you know of anything I appreciate it.

For just cutouts, you could unplug the passthroughs. Often though, you can tell a change better standing further back.

My son was using some sub 500$ handhelds from Diesel Laptops. They would do much more thsn you're looking for, but would be helpful for multiple trucks

Yeah I do pull the pass throughs to try to find my weak injectors but it doesn't always work that well. I could try the standing back further. I currently have a weak one and it only sputters occasionally in the higher RPM range.

Aggrevating Cummins injectors. I've had a bunch like that. Definitely easier to tell a difference sitting in the seat, standing back away, or another room even, then all that at different RPM's.

Maybe @DUNE-T has used one of the cheaper versions. I think he has or had a N14

Ah that is good advice too. No clue why I never thought of leaving it unplugged and then going into the cab to try different RPMs....I tell ya sometimes I don't think of the simplest stuff. Lately when I pull them at idle they all make a difference. But then running down the road is a different story. A really good mechanic I was talking to a few years ago recommended I buy some super old OTC scanner but I don't remember the name now. The truck had newish injectors when I bought it but now they are going out one by one lol. I replaced two recently. Now another is going. In the future I will 100% replace them in pairs. Cause otherwise I am wasting a lot of work.

I've got the Diesel Laptops big laptop. It uses bluetooth, so it makes it easy to listen from different angles, while doing the cutout at idle and 1000 rpm's.

Definitely handy, but not practical for most.

BTW, keep an eye out for oil in the pass through. Common issue that can lead to intermittent symptoms. They hardly ever get replaced, and are easy to overlook

Yeah I don't need anything that fancy lol. These trucks don't have a lot of data to be read anyways. Plus I only need it for injector testing which at some point they will all be new anyways and then should be good for 300k or so. I think when I check them again I will unplug each one and listen from different angles and vary RPMs. That gives me a lot more inputs to test. I had always heard at idle if you unplug them you will know right away but that hasn't been the case for me really. That has only worked once for me.

Even with the laptop, they can be hard to find.

Don't miss my edit above about the pass throughs

Yep I have checked those too. I have replacements for all of them but they were all good besides one. Unfortunately I just still have a weak injector. I can see why people just do all six at once lol. I thought I was going to maximize their life span but instead I am just annoyed.

I don't own a diagnostic computer, but I did use a bootleg copy of Cummins software on my buddy's computer few times. I think he bought it on eBay for under $1000 with all kinds of different software.
Usually I just unplug harness or use a temperature gun to measure exhaust manifold on engine startup to see which cylinder is colder than others
