I have no problem with the sign on bonus, just them taking other money away from the same driver to help pay it. Don't you find that a little dishonest? They don't mention that on the radio.

Not in the least do I find it dishonest. A bonus is a bonus. Sign with Schneider, stay a year and get 7500, or 5000 or whatever it is at the time. It's not dishonest in the least. The guy can even idle all he wants and still get his bonus, sounds like a good deal to me.

I can't switch to local right now. The DBL in charge of Chicago local said you don't get weekends off. I said that the other driver told me that he gets weekends off and Saturdays are optional. She told me that is not true. You have to work Saturday and Sundays you are on Call. If I am going to work 12 hour days, I need a day or two off to recuperate and be healthy.

All very interesting points. It seems that most of this is perspective and geography. Some areas are moving more than others and depending on your perspective the sign on bonus is either paid fairly or not. I can live with some areas being more active than others. I get that. It's logical. The bonus? Well I have the frame of mind that it gets paid out over time. It's not singular to the trucking industry to pay out bonuses that way. At least sign on bonuses. As far as idle times go, it's another performance metric and like any, I'll play around at the edges to see where I can be most comfortable without costing myself money. It's all about opportunity cost, right? What do I have to give up (not all the way but maybe a little) in order to make sure I'm getting my bonus. I can work with that.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Very enlightening. I will be posting my story as I progress with Schneider in the very near future. I am sure I'll be able to share a story from my perspective and I hope it helps others the way you all have helped me so far.
