Schneider boosts pay for most truck drivers 8% to 13%
Green Bay trucking company Schneider is boosting pay for a major share of its drivers by 8% to 13% as the firm joins a growing wave of wage increases rippling through the industry.
Schneider this week said it had raised the pay for van truckload drivers, the over-the-road workhorses of the business. The move follows an average $4,000-a-year increase for its less-numerous tanker drivers, announced in May.
Three months ago, U. S. Xpress Enterprises made big industry news with a 13% average pay increase. Other, smaller carriers had been bumping up wages, but the U.S. Xpress announcement was striking because of the size of both the increase and of the company.
Like Schneider, Chattanooga, Tenn.-based U.S. Xpress, with more than 7,000 drivers, is a major trucking company. And both firms operate in the ultracompetitive truckload sector, hauling trailers filled with single shipments, often over long distances.
"U.S. Xpress kind of set the pace," said Gordon Klemp, founder and CEO of the firm that publishes the widely followed National Survey of Driver Wages.
"We're seeing some raises that are very substantial bigger than we've seen since 1997 when J.B. Hunt made a really big move," Klemp said.

Anyone??? Those I have asked say that they are surprised and have seen nothing to suggest the increase is hitting their pay statements -
It happened last spring (at least for me). I went from being topped out at .39 to .395 with a max top out of .41, which I'm now at.
