Driver drive it....period. My god how much can we beat this? I know this when I pick up in PA tomorrow and I have 31 hours of drive time to get to Denver to the house by Happy Hour I have to average around 60mph I can blow that away being an IC and the extra dollars are worth it to be home. Now the last 1100 miles to California I might run that at 60mph as I am unloading and heading right back with a load to Denver....theres times we have to adjust to make...period.

Nobody is arguing that. Driving faster when you got somewhere to be is a totally different situation. You chose that situation, and it had nothing to do with maximizing profit, it had everything to do with going to the house. We all do that from time to time.

The 65 and 55 was an average speed that was used as an example.
There's times myself I'd go 70 across an entire state, sometimes 55.. just depends.
In my operation I stay out for weeks at at a time.
Going faster for me could mean the difference between being forced to sit vs having more hours to earn more revenue.
It's not fun passing on a high $ load because I don't have enough hours to pull it off, it's happened.
Here there's lots of open window appointment drop/hooks so going faster could mean getting to my loads sooner and keep more hours on my 70.
Doesn't mean it always makes sense to go faster....
For example when I'm on my final load before going home I'll go slower because my hours won't matter anymore being I'll be taking time off. In that case it pays to go slower.
Someone on a dedicated account is another example it doesn't make sense to go faster if it won't make a difference on the miles/revenue they get.
I'm not disagreeing with you that going slower makes sense in a lot of ways financially, I'm just pointing out it doesn't always mean that all the time for everybody's operation.Last edited: Feb 23, 2016

That is the great thing about being in business, we all have a method that works for us.

To steer this into another topic, since the driving slow has been beaten to death now.....
You mention that you stay our for weeks at a time. Is this due to being in a difficult location to get home in? Or just personal preference?
I try to reset at home every week. I will, on occasion, stay our for more than a week, and run off my recap until I get to the house (no more than 10-12 days, ever). I find though, for me, I seem to do better by getting home every week for a reset. By every week, I mean being out 5-8 days, depending on where my loads take me that week. Parking on the road for 34 hours results in me spending too much money. I tend to want to eat in restaurants, get a motel, or anything I can to get out of the truck. Can't stand to be in the truck for a reset.JCB & Associates, scottlav46 and nordrunner Thank this. -
It's a personal preference. I prefer to stay out and run as profitable as I can for a few weeks then take a few days to a week off. If I tried to be home every week I'd earn a LOT less money.
Not that where I live is bad but having to find a load to and out of home most always isn't the most profitable of decisions.RootHog Thanks this. -
Haven't we learned by now there are no absolutes in this business?

I've gotten into this fuel economy debate more times than I care to. Usually as a result of some driver over hearing me say I don't care about fuel economy except for a severe drop in mpg means something is wrong with the truck.
Then the proceeding lecture begins about how I could be making so much more money if I paid attention to and tracked my mpg. Every time this lecture comes from someone who is netting less than I am.
So keep on spending your time tracking mpgs, I'll spend mine tracking profits.scottlav46, GoGetta07, freightwipper and 1 other person Thank this. -
