I love the free refills at Carlisle. Only place that has such a thing.

Whelp. Day one of school all done. Quite a bit of info pushed into our heads but our instructor told us we'll be going back over everything several times as we move forward. They'll train us for all the endorsements but I won't be getting my Hazmat until a little further down the line, mostly because I don't have a copy of my Birth Certificate.
Something cool did happen though. One of the SNI guys came in to talk to us and give us a run down of how wonderful SNI is. He also brought in a driver in one of the "Ride of Pride" trucks. Very sweet looking rig.
I decided to run a bit of a test and asked some questions that I already knew the answer to. Got honest answers back so that made me happy. One of the other students asked what the turnover rate was. I about lost it. The guy answered with " I'm not sure of the exact percentage. But we do have one of the lowest among the megas."
Now, I'm not sure of how SNI stacks up against the other megas in regards to the turnover rate. However, I would never call 100%+ turnover as low. I also find it suspect that someone who goes to schools to talk to students doesn't know what the actual turnover rate is.
The only other thing that caught me a bit off guard and I didn't say anything about it, was when the gentleman proclaimed SNI being the largest privately owned transportation company in the country. I really wanted to say, "Not for much longer since we're going public." but I kept my mouth shut. No sense in rocking the boat before I even get on the payroll.

You sound alot like me when I was in school. I'd find out what recruiter was coming that day, then jump on TTR beforehand so I could go in with a full arsenal of not so pretty, real world questions about the company as soon as they were done talking about the shiny trucks and satellite tv.
I remember a Werner recruiter got a bit heated with me after I asked about how they do alot of load swaps repowering to team drivers on long runs. A fair question and something that Werner is pretty well known for doing frequently. Well, he didn't like it much. Ya gotta ask the real questions though. All anyone else ever asked is #1. Do we get new trucks, #2. CPM (but never bother to ask average miles or exception pay), #3 What kind of drug testing.rda2580 and SingingWolf Thank this. -
Turnover rate is a odd calculation. Technically new drivers are "hired" on the second day of orientation but 1/3 don't "graduate" from the STATE and go solo. Should they count into the turnover?
What about those we fire for accidents or gross stupidity?
Or those who pass training, run two loads and then quit because they are homesick?
Do ICs count?
It depends on how the company does the math, and no one publishes the real number.
That said our turnover rate is going up. Those of us with 3 weeks vacation are staying put, everyone else seems to be moving to the exit.91B20H8, SingingWolf and AM14 Thank this. -
Did SNI bring pizza?
Don't worry about your Hazmat yet. I'm not even sure how much extra pay you'll get (if any), in intermodal it was only $10 extra per load, which doesn't cover the additional hassle. Installing the placards, calling the hazmat hotline to answer the monotonous questions about the paperwork, having to take the outerbelt around cities, etc. And it's not like WM has tons of hazmat freight lol. -
No sni didn't bring pizza to the school. I wouldn't get an increase in pay anyways for hazmat since I'll be pulling dedicated Walmart reefer.
-
I let my hazmat expire a few months ago. Does Walmart require it?
-
Cheap ########. Even Covenant brought pizza to my school!!
AM14 Thanks this. -
I sat through probably a dozen recruiting spiels. Never got pizza or anything other than a load of BS fresh and hot. TMC had nice pens though.
