New CDL holder as of last week. I got an offer to work tanker at Schneider. This was my plan all along to try and get into tanker. I was told it's 40 cent a mile to start. Going up a couple of cent every quarter for the first year with $12 an hour detention pay.
I also have a job offer for a flat bed job that pays 51 cent a mile loaded and 46 cent a mile unloaded.Pay increases by 8 cpm after 90 days.
Both have similar tuition reimbursement and training pay.The flat bed is a couple of hundred more for training but I'm not concerned about training pay as it is short.
Am I being stupid taking the lesser paying job with the hope it pays out in the long run or should I take the higher paying job now. I knew the Schneider pay would be low but that seems like a big difference.I am really not sure what to do? Am I better of getting a year at the higher pay and then switching to tanker or maybe stay there if it's a good fit?
Can anyone weigh in on this please. I have to make the decision soon.
Schneider Tanker or flatbed

I'd go with Schneider Tanker. This will lead to those huge paying tanker jobs after 12 or 24 months tanker experience.
firemedic2816, nextgentrucker and Pointblanka Thank this. -
51 cents per mile? lol why would you even consider that? I get 74 cents per mile and 2-3 cent per mile bonus every quarter depending how many miles I drive. Run like hell. There’s sooo many better companies to choose from.nextgentrucker Thanks this.

Did you start out at 74 cpm right out of cdl school?
`
I still recommend Schneider Tanker to get his career started.Pointblanka Thanks this. -
I am not sure what to do. I had decided on regional and if the money wasn't cutting it possibly over the road. I don't have any experience. Both companies have yards 25 minutes from my house. I read on previous posts drivers saying it was 51 cent a mile to start with Schneider but maybe it went down. I have exhausted looking at job boards. A lot want 1 year experience. I know Maverick and Melton pay higher but out for two weeks. Again my original plan was to get the fuel hauling experience and play the long game as Chinatown stated above. Now that I actually qualify to get a job I am just not sure what to do and looking for opinions. I would obviously get a year or so in and look to change. The pay just seems crazy low even for a rookie. Any opinions are welcome. If anyone works there or did recently could you let me know your average weekly pay. Thanks

Try looking into fuel hauling companies that fuel up local construction equipment on work sites. You’ll usually work night time, and shouldn't have a problem taking home 1k.77fib77 and Pointblanka Thank this.

The pay isn't crazy low for a driver with zero experience.
Schneider gives new cdl school grads a chance to enter the hazmat tanker world with no experience where other companies won't give them the time of day.
I'm not a shill for Schneider or any other company and have never worked for Schneider. I do know it's a great choice to get started in the hazmat tanker world early, in the beginning, of a career.Albertaflatbed, Eddiec, Pointblanka and 1 other person Thank this. -
No. Started at 64cpmnextgentrucker, Pointblanka and Chinatown Thank this.

The easiest trucking job I've ever had was hazmat/tankers. Ran 48 states & Canada. Won't find better shippers & receivers to deal with than in the tanker world.
Speed_Drums, nextgentrucker, lual and 2 others Thank this. -
Also try doing google maps search of trucking companies around you. If they have decent reviews and decent safer score than give them a call and ask around. You never know what you’ll find.Pointblanka Thanks this.
