Thanks for the reply ethos. Maybe you'll be assigned as my trainer once I get going. Never know. hehe
The starting pay is no issue to me as long as I get to start in Tankers. The No shaving, PPE, Long sleeves are no issue either. Did plenty of that in the Military.
This darn Hazmat getting back is taking too long lol. I'm ready to get started.
Let me ask you this:
As a Tanker Driver, are there designated areas to park in or is it pretty much the same as Vans ect going to whatever place has room?

Same as vans.

What is meant by "no shaving" and do y'all have to wear long sleeves with Schneider ?
-
No shaving??? You have to shave if your bulk. Some chemical plants require before you go in so it's company policy.
You have to wear long sleeves any time your working around the equipment. So inspections, loading or unloading. But when your just driving you wear whatever you want.Last edited: Jun 12, 2013
mclass555 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the quick answer. I am thinking about applying for one of these tanker jobs. But what is it like walking on top of these tankers? I am 62 and really don't like heights, wonder if I could do it? Can I crawl on them, lol
-
Lots of people have problems with it. If your really nervous about it then you shouldnt apply as there is no way around it.

Hi Ethos
I have read some of your post and found them to be very informative. I myself am a Marine veteran that is currently finishing up week 1 of my CDL school. I am very interested in working with Schneider OTR Tanker Division and wanted to see if you can answer some of my questions..... Whats the pay like for a rookie tanker driver and weekly avg? How does the VA GIBILL apprenticeship program work with Schneider? How long do i have to ride out with a trainer? What are the avg days out before home time, and how easy is it to transfer to different divisions within the company like the oil fields or intermodal? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -
This might answer some questions . http://schneiderjobs.com/company-drivers/military/apprenticeship-program
A few red flags . In the FAQ they say you are automatically enrolled for per diem . Do some research on per diem here . It's a ripoff allowing carriers to reduce your social security earnings . Full prediem can be deducted on your taxes at the end of the year if not "paid" by a carrier .
Why is the "apprentice program" a full year when normal time with a trainer is 4 to 6 weeks ? What happens if you leave before a year ? Members here warn against company training with employment obligation . You become an indentured slave . Leave in less than a year and you'll be billed for schooling and not get a training certificate .
If you qualify for GI benefits you're much better off going to a community college or private school . Check Prime pay against Schneiders . -
Rick, is not correct. The apprenticeship program allows use of your G.I. Bill benefits. The pay you something like 1100 dollars a month, although it does drop after six months to I think 800. Its been a while so dont quote me. Schneider is not the only company that does it and has nothing at all to do with the time your with your trainer. If you quit then the benefits stop, thats all. You could probably go to another carrier and complete them. The year mark is just what the VA says, again Schneider has little to do with it other than sending your hours in.
Your time with a trainer depends on you really. 10 days is what its supposed to be but it can be shorter or longer. If its longer than four weeks something would be wrong. I have not heard of that happening.
You get six days of a month. I generally run three weeks out and take four days at home.
Pay starts at .33 cpm and after six months goes to .39. Your average will depend on you.
Finally, trucking is what you make of it. You shouldnt listen to people who dont even work for the company your interested in as is evident by Ricks post. There are no "red flags". Nothing sinister or evil about the apprenticeship program and Schneider is not trying to screw you.
Schneider does not offer training with any obligations and Rick you should know that just by all the posts about Schneider on here.
In terms of transferring I really don't know as I have never done it. Other Schneider drivers should be able to help you on that.
You can also opt out of the "rip off" per diem plan.
Look, here is a little secret I have learned. Most companies, shockingly are not out to screw you. I have met happy Werner, Swift, U.S Express and even England drivers. Now reading this forum you would not know that but it's true. Do your research, every company is a little different and one doesn't suit everyone. Just please don't get in this industry with an attitude of suspicion. I have made a good living from trucking and I will continue to do so.Last edited: Jun 12, 2013

O.K. , I misunderstood . Schneider does not have a training school . Drivers have to already have their CDL and have already used their GI benefits to get a CDL . Benefits are limited so why waste them on an apprentice program ? They could make $1100 a month more working for a better paying carrier . Prime starts solos at a higher rate than Schneider pays at 6 months .
