There is no shortage of quality drivers.......there's a shortage of CHEAP drivers ! That's why companies don't care about driver retention. They like and want to continually hire NEW drivers. Cheaper cpm and the tax benefit or credit they receive for "creating " a job.

So in essence what you say is some/many companies have two sides in operations, i.e., quality and recruit. Hmmm... I would think driver retention to attract quality drivers would be to the advantage of companies and drivers alike.

Well sir, how ever it shakes down, I believe I have what it takes to be a professional quality driver. I just have to get new/recent milage logged to demonstrate that to be the fact. I'm being started at .38 which is not great. I am accustomed to very good income and believe it is attainable in the trucking industry as a professional driver and/or O/O. But dues must be paid to start-out to get there - I'm fully cognizant and prepared.

I was told .35 for flatbed that I would be eligible to switch to after 6 mos. I could join FreyMiller for .33 but still less than the gig I'm facing. So I'll go for the most I can get available to me now and revisit options down the road. I appreciate the comments but do have to decide based on what here directly form the carriers.

I've contacted some carriers multiple times to get to different recruits and also received varying stories. Hmmm... so somewhere in between the stories should be the reality. Crapshoot!!

Hello, I am about to start with Schneider soon. I start at private CDL school in about two weeks and two weeks after that I guess I will start Schn, Orientation in West Memphis OC ( so I am told ) I was told by the CDL school to apply for a very specific position on the Schn. jobs website and list them (the school) as the referral. A few days later I received a call from a Recruiter at the W.Memphis OC. She went over my application and after some question and answers I was told that I would receive more information at the CDL school as the graduation approached and either her or another recruiter would come to the school weekly.
From what I have gathered they are fronting the school cost on my behalf and take payments out of my check. This is a new career for me and have no . -NO- CDL experience. I am not super thrilled about working for Schneider (I have read and heard more negative than positive stories, but that is to be expected). I might stay with them or I might move on to somewhere else. My concern is if I do want to go somewhere else before they pay off the school will that reflect negatively on me with other companies?
When I look at other companies I do want to work for the application always asks "Are you subject to any contract or agreement of any kind that would in any way restrict your ability to work" What does that even mean?

Thanks for all the advise. Stay safe.

My advice is to read any paper very closely before you sign it. Usually, you have to work for a period of time if a company is paying for your CDL, or else you'll owe them some money...apparently this was not told to you up front. Knowing SNI, I know they're not going to school you for free- something to keep in mind in case you decide you don't like this line of work.

A number of companies bind you to a contract for a certain period of time to get a return on their investment, i.e. CR England 7 mos., Celadon 1 yr. etc. Keep one thing in mind that most companies won't consider a driver with less than 6 mos. OTR.

Ask the recruiter straight up about any contractual commitment. If you break a contract you will be required to settle and pay a prorated amount. The right thing to do is research well for the right company that best works for your circumstances. As already ready stated, read the docs before you sign.

Unless the company really does a newbie driver wrong, the right thing to do is give the company due time for covering his/her training and taking the risk. It is a 2 way street that both parties do not always recognize.
