"He did not realize that he had hit that little girl," Lawson said. "He said that the bus driver hit the stop sign and was continuing on, and Israel told him, 'Hey, I think you killed that little girl.' And the bus driver immediately backed up, and Israel saw her. And he knew she was dead."

"He saw the sister jump out of the way of the bus, back up and then she screamed, 'You hit my sister. You hit my sister,'" Lawson said.
Another neighbor said she went to help after her nephew ran home describing the horrifying scene.
The girl's mother was traumatized and was staring at her daughter's body.
"She was just standing there -- visibly in shock. I just asked what was going on, and that's when she said, 'Don't come up here, they just killed my little girl,'" a neighbor said.
Students on the bus were put on another bus. The school district offered counseling to all children on the bus.
The Kansas City, Kan., School District also put a crisis team in place at the girl's school, John F. Kennedy Elementary.
Some parents told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum that their children were distraught over the girl's death.
"This breaks my heart. This was one of our kids," said David Smith, spokesman for the school district.
Breit reported that the Rev. Suzie Crocker grew up on the corner where the girl was killed. She said the corner has always been dangerous.
Other parents said buses come through the area too fast. Residents also complained that the streets are narrow and there are no sidewalks, so children are always in danger of passing cars.
Crocker also said her father, who still lives in the home, was crying as he told her about the child's death. Crocker said her father will be constantly reminded of what happened right in front of his home.
The bus driver has been suspended during the investigation.

... wait wait wait.

Barring the tragic loss of life, isnt he LEGALLY REQUIRED to stop if he hits something, like oh a stop sign? Isnt that in itself leaving the scene...

He better lose his job, there is no reason on this earth a driver who wasnt dead or having a stroke should have been so far off the road as to HIT A STOP SIGN much less a kid.
