I haven't had any oversize yet. We don't do it much from what I gather but the other day my dispatcher said he was looking at one but we didn't get it. That's what got me thinking shoot I don't know poop about oversize.
Just got off the phone with my operations manager. He was looking at a load for me to pick up tonight cause my dispatcher dropped the ball. It's a mini frac tank I guess. 111 inches tall. He asked if I could get it. My trailer measures 51 inches at the 5th wheel. I told him we could try but if it was over 13 6 I ain't moving w/o a permit. He said it's too late to get permits. So no frac tank for me
School me on oversize loads

Hi Chewy, a blessing in disguise. Like the others say, oversize is a whole different ball game. There is so much to know. You don't just jump into oversize, like it's a load of toilet paper. Like this guy a few months ago, hauling that oversize building, couldn't make the turn, got stuck on the tracks, and a train came along, and turned it into toothpicks, AND HE HAD A POLICE ESCORT! Please, don't take this lightly in the future.
blairandgretchen and catalinaflyer Thank this. -
I'm trying not to. Trying to figure out the regs first. With my record and the uphill battle I'm fighting if I'm not satisfied I'm not moving.

The yellow signs are allowed in some provinces, but you need to read the permit conditions and/or relevant traffic act section to be sure and under what conditions. For example, you can run the yellow signs in Alberta, but you must have a permit to do so. The same advice to check permits/acts applies to when you have to run signs, flags, lights, have escorts, etc., and that is universal advice regardless of state or province.TripleSix, catalinaflyer and Old Iron Thank this.

Ol Not4 just brought up something up that reminds me of something I tell new drivers. (Not wanting to harp on pilot cars again, since it's been covered quite extensively but I am going to touch on a few things because as a whole, YOU GUYS SUCK, and I will see to it my drivers are protected against the slackers in the business . The ones that are good at your job, I hate you because I miss a good pilot car when they leave and the good ones won't be offended by anything I say. The slackers may goeth intercourse themselves.)
Chewy, the magic number is 12. Usually, it's around 12 ft wide when states start requiring pilot cars. DO N0t TRUST AN UNKNOWN PILOT CAR!!!!!!!!!!! They will lead you wrong, and it's your ticket, not theirs. Part of your homework is to read up on the pilot car regs. Certain states will require pilot car registration, and proof of COMMERCIAL insurance, meaning their vehicle insurance must state that the vehicle is used in commercial work. Certain states require for pilot cars to wear PPE gear. Certain states require a top sign. pilot cars hate running the top signs because it hurts fuel economy. Do not depend on them to tell you what's required. Do not depend on them to follow the permitted route. Most pilot cars are people who couldn't make the grade as drivers. Never allow a pilot car to take charge of a run.
If you are unsure, ask. There are plenty guy here that are more than willing to help.Chewy352 Thanks this. -
Wow, Triple, apparently, the message there is bad pilot car operators. I agree, there are some schmoe's doing that. This has been shown before, but I believe this was the rear pilot person's fault, as don't they steer the dolly?

Sammons has handbook that I find really useful too. I keep a copy on my tablet and phone.

As with any of these types of resources, use them for reference purposes only and make sure you read all permits and regulations thoroughly.Chewy352 Thanks this. -
Thanks that will be a great reference too.
