I wish the requirements at least for flags banners and lights was the same nation wide. I just looked at California's crazy requirements.

You are correct on using them as a "reference" only, I'm most familiar with Ohio because that's where I spend most of my time. But after just a cursory reading I found several things untrue with the Ohio rules listed in that Sammons handbook.

Pilot cars do not always steer the dollies. We steer our own dollies when hauling bridge beams for the most part. About the only time we don't is when new or when we are in tight areas and we can not see the dolly or where it is more expedient to get out of traffic having someone steer the dolly for you.
This one is on the driver I believe. He was going too fast to compensate for the turn in the dolly wheels. I have also seen where a stop light changing from green to yellow will cause the dolly wheels to turn. It happens to us when pulling bridge beams.
In looking at it again that dolly was not being steered. It looks like when he made the turn the dolly twisted to the right. It happened to me once. I don't see any chains crossed on there to keep the dolly from twisting. We have 2 of them and we cross chain the front of the dolly so that it can not twist under what we are hauling. The chains over the top will not keep the dolly from twisting under the load.
I would say that improper securement was the culprit in this accident.tsavory, CanadianVaquero, truckdad and 1 other person Thank this. -
What was so crazy bout Cali requirements?

That's what I'd like to know. I haven't seen anything any different then any other state.
There's an app called oversize. Someone posted a couple months back on the forum. It has a free trial. Subscription is $.99 a.month. I'm not subscribed ao I can't say how good it is. -
Ca is actually easier as they don't require flags on right side! As the law says. A chp enlightend me on this back in 96. Section 3: Transporting Cargo Safely
... is wider than 102 inches, a red or fluorescent flag not less than 12 inches square must be displayed at left front and left rear during daylight (CVC §25104).

I was just glancing over it. Normally I'll see an amber bight on the tractor and one on the trailer. In the ca part it was saying an amberlight on the left side for some situations all 4 corners for others. I probably spoke to soon for my ignorance in the matter.

The ca vehicle code contradicts itself several places. I told the chp back then" so you are sayin that if Im hangen over 4' on the right side I still dont need a flag there?" He said, "thats how the idiots in the state legislature wrote it" I quit flaggin the right side after that & kept that page in the book marked. A scale cop called me in to see the permit for the 633D on jeep & dolly down in LA years later, all was ok but he said " your flags blew off the right side. I said nope, & showed him the book. He laughed & said thats new to me & said see ya !johndeere4020 and Chewy352 Thank this.
