I read every post, but here is a question.
You know how some on here say that they went through most of the first week, and low and behold the company finds a glitch in their background and are sent home.
Do these companys kinda keep the student (pay training) over the guy who already has his cdls?
You do here about it once in a while ,but the guys or girls who already have a cdl (not through the company applied to)get sent home more.

Is that false ,because it would seem its true.
But what do i know :biggrin_25515:

Well this is JMO but, I think they would keep someone that has to "pay for training" such as contract over someone who already has their CDL. That way they can pay them less. Say I had a ticket 15 miles over at 7 years experience and you had a ticket 15 miles over just starting out or just a year in. They would look to you because they know they will not have to pay you as much as they would me

Tree, those mega-carriers turnover rates are so high they take anybody and everybody!

With that being said Doc, your list of 7 would be my top 7 to stay away from. You live in Indy right? You pretty much have thousands of companies to choose from! Stay away from those mega-carriers! As for the Watkins Shepard, they do not have trainers. Unless you are very confident in your skills and have some kind of background in trucking I would think twice about going there. Not that they are a bad company, I hear good things about them. You just aren't going to make money wondering around the country not knowing what you are doing. Go with a trainer and your chances of success will be much greater! Especially this time of year!

    Doc Daniels Thanks this.

no.....they will NOT keep the student. the student is a giant scape-goat, a lamb to be put to slaughter if you will......

a screw up, no matter how small can get the student butchered.

the "experienced driver" is MORE stable (in most cases) in his/her level of expertise.

i have personally seen students get as far as getting assigned thier own truck, get called into the office....never to be seen again....

this i saw when i was at (the now former) Victory Express out of Medway, OH, which is now US Express, and when i was at ComTrans (a division of north american van lines, commercial transport division...ComTrans) out of "the Fort", which is Fort Wayne, IN...... and the long gone, reefer company TranStar....out of wisconsin(??)

you go for orientation, and you ain't hired, till you're hired.....especially students.....and God only knows the students i saw going home, nearly in tears....

I am! I been talking to people I know, people I dont, and reading forums. I been getting advice from everywhere i can. I have a friend who says there is no money in it im better off at Mc Donalds. Oh yea 7.25/hr really cuts the mustard man.

My dad says from the years he was on the road(20 yrs ago) .25/mile dont make squat. every dollar you make goes back into the expence of living on the road.

and everyone on here make every compnay sound like the yankees of baseball. Screw the trucker and everyones life sucks.

If all this is true why are so many of you doing it? Why do I still wanna do it?

Im getting brain crapms from all the reasearch im doing.

Imactually from the GARY area according to "whats the closest truck yard game"

Being I do not have my cdl I am weighing school vs apprenticeship I dont know where to go with no expierience. In all the other threads people say go to one of the list I mentioned and get your 1 yr in then go anywhere.

This list puts me back to square one.. looking em all up seeing if they have the apprenticships.

Is it better to get my CDL from the BMV then go to the class or get it through the school or apprenticeship?

OK darlin first and foremost.....CALM DOWN....deep breaths....wooosah.....ok now.... starting out you are going to be making just about if not less than a McDonald's worker by the time you figure in 70 hour weeks. No sleep. And being gone from home. A lot of that money will be going back to the expense of living on the road at least for the time it will take you to get everything you need to at least function out here.Once you get these things and maybe start eating off the truck then you will start saving a little money up. But don't expect to see lots of money in this industry especially your first couple of years. Every company...ESPECIALLY the bigger ones are the yankees of baseball. They all have their good and bad to them. Some are a lot worse than others. On that one it would be up to you to decide which company YOU could live with until you get your experience in. In these times it basically is screw the truck driver. We are lower than low in a lot of people's opinions, but, most of us have skin made of leather and don't care. Why are we still doing this job? Well that would depend on the individual, but, I'll try to give a few examples. 1) It's all we know 2) Newbies think this is the sure way to make money 3) They can't find any other jobs in this economic time 4) Their degree has gotten them nowhere 5) They think they are going to get to see places....now I am sure there are a lot of reasons I have missed, but, I did the best I could this late at night with no sleep. Why do you still want to do it??? Only you can answer that one. The best advice I or anyone else can give you is to just take what you have researched and pick the company you feel works best for you. We can give you different companies all day long, but, just because it works for us does not mean it will be right for you. The more companies you look at the more confused you are going to be. I think the best thing for you would to be stop looking at anymore new companies, narrow down the ones you have now to the bare minimum, and go from them. Other than that I do not know what I or any other person here on this forum can tell you. Most important....QUIT STRESSING!!! You are only making it worse for yourself when you do! Good luck to you
