Look at Northern Italy 1918 to 1920. Look at the impact of the Spanish Flu there, and the resulting impacts to the economy. If I recall correctly N Italy had a death rate about 3 times that of its neighbors, and in the resulting years had a higher overal mortality rate than the pre war years while its neighbors saw a decreasing mortality rate. All of Europe had a bad economy, but N Italy was by far the worst and took longer to recover.

Last fall a guy died (car accident), his death has resulted in at least two businesses shuttering, with over 100 employees losing their jobs. Wife couldn't assume all of his duties, and paying somone else to assume them cost too much. It was better for her to shut down the business than it was to sell it or keep it open.

One death can have an outsized influence in the greater world.

However, in his case some of us can make an exception.

Spanish flu killed middle aged people.
Those employees probably found another job pretty quick.

During that time period the world was still recovering from World War I.

Oh you want to talk empathy, what about the people losing the businesses they've bustsd their ##### building because of your excessive germaphobia? What about the kids who are going to do even worse in school without actually being there to ask the questions they need to ask? What about the teenagers committing suicide from the lack of social contact, I'm sure you haven't heard about any of that because it's nowhere in the news? Empathy my fuzzy ###.

Virologist hospitalized with coronavirus believes he got it through his eyes

Now, could someone tell me how a mask would prevent this?

Remember, those blue masks that these truckstops sell don't stop the virus, they're too porous. They filter down to 5 microns...the virus is 1.25 microns. The homemade masks made from various fabric are less effective. People argue that "it's better than nothing"...remember, it only takes 1 to get thru for you to contract it. Wearing a mask it like putting a bandaid on an amputation. It might stop a little blood, but the rest of your blood keeps flowing.
