I haul loads brokered by JB once in a while, I always hand write in and out times on BOL anywhere I can find a white space to write on, I don't even ask a shipper/receiver to initial it, it's up to my dispatcher to settle issues with JB, and miraculously he always does, because contract says detention after 2 hours, REGARDLESS whether or not shipper/receiver pays. It "encourages" them not to deal with BS shippers/receivers/brokers and it appears they can afford to do that so far. Of course, I don't sit like a dummy watching the clock, if it's clear that I'm not getting loaded/unloaded on time I call dispatcher, he calls JB ASAP and does whatever he does but detention is paid always, sometimes I call JB brokers to leave a beatching trail record. I worked for this "The best to fork for" flatbed company for 2 years, I accumulated probably more than a thousand of detention hours and guess what I got paid, $14 in 2 years for sitting for 13 hours, $1/hour. Right now, detention pay is roughly 5-15% of my paycheck, I'm legal always, and I don't mind it.

So, here's an update. I complained to Internet Truckstop and yesterday I received a check from JB Hunt for $237.50. They actually owe $325. Not sure what their logic was, but the saga continues.

No it is fact. They play a percentage game. The driver has to ask for what they are owed when it is anything but miles and sometimes that to.. They know a percentage of drivers will not go to the mat for what they are owed so they lay out the hoops and hope you forget or don't wish to jump through them

Talked to a driver the other day who has to request his vacation pay. It is not payed automatically, even though it is owed. It has to be requested by each anniversary date. And if you snuz you loose. When he does stop offs he has to ask to get payed for them, detention, layover etc all has to be requested to be paid or the company won't pay it.

If you look in these driver handbooks most pay other then miles has to be requested. Even if the company knows they owe it they will not pay without it being requested. Saves them lots of money.

And you can bet JBH will bill the detention for this much time. And this carp about it not being on the BOL is pure semantics. And asinine that some brought it up as a excuse not to pay They have documentation of detention WITH the BOL at time of pu. And the lack of communication between the carrier and the shipper regarding detention policy is not the problem of the driver. They can only get what the shipper is willing to give.

I said do you pay overtime ? He says no.I say why not? he says if I paid everybody overtime "I'd be out of business" I said you should probably go out of business if your gonna rip off the workers...... Just because I drive a truck dont mean I'm gonna be ANYBODYS doormat !! understand my son ???

The company I drive for NOW pays me:

    detention time
From the second your tires leave the road and hit the shipper/consignee driveway?

    loading & unloading
Same as what they'd pay a lumper? Or some crappy $.02 per 1000 weight? Or flat out $40 or $70 per load?

    drop & hooking time
Time? By the hour? Even at $10.00 an hour, and 15 minutes to D&H.....$2.50 is better than a swift kick in the buns.

    breakdown
As it should be......but do you have to wait 14 hrs. first (i.e.- layover)

    in the shop
As it should be......but do you have to wait 14 hrs. first (i.e.- layover)

    chains on & off
Not uncommon.....they would LOVE to see you keep going with that load (if you're willing to do it). I don't think they could pay me $100.00 to throw chains....just not worth the stress.

    lay over after 14 hours
Now that's good stuff right there! But, how much is the question?

    scale inspection time
Even if you're put out of service? Doubt it. Lot's of people give you a bonus for a CLEAN inspection.....nobody is gonna pay you for a BAD one that does nothing but cost them money and SafeStat dings.

all time spent at the canadian crossing
As it should be.....but see "tire chaining" for my views on crossing borders also.

and any time spent slip seating
Slip seat? In OTR? That's GOTTA suck.

    No......actually; no I don't. Dad.
