Older guys like me still like to believe in honor and integrity. Used to be a handshake and your word was all you ever needed. I'd rather have a testicle removed with vice grips than to go back on my word.

Today its all about money and what can you get someone to do for free.

For example,.. I picked up 40' loaded container out of the port of Ga the other day. I call the broker to let him know I'm loaded and he asks me if I want to make an 'easy' $75.00. One thing my ex wife taught me well,.. there is no such thing as an easy $75.00.

So I sarcastically answer him back,.. that depends how we both define easy. He says he has another O/O there to pick up another container. But for some reason (He didnt say why),.. the driver could not get into the port. Would I be willing to drop my trailer and take his trailer to get loaded and bring it outside the gate. I considered my options at that point and thought about countering with doing it for $150, considering the time and effort needed. Then I considered the dark side,.. why cant this guy get into the port? What happens if he says I damaged his trailer,.. what happens if something is already damaged on the trailer? So I lied,.. I said I was already an hour down the road. Sorry,.. cant do it.

So in reality its a shame,.. but in this sue happy world,.. I had to turn down a potential $150 because there was too much risk involved.

Probably Longshoreman union members refusing the dump truck. Their favorite word is "NO."

Hurst, I just started working with an agent this week moving stuff from the Baltimore port back to the Midwest. Let me say, as an open deck operator, TWIC is one of my best friends. It takes awhile to get, but it will pay for itself in headaches and dollars saved. I would highly recommend it, sir!:biggrin_25520:

And for sure, thanks for sharing about your experience. It's awful that we are exposed to the underhanded in this industry, but your experience will serve many going forward because you choose to share with the rest. As far as getting half of your money up front, here at the Big-Blue Star, we can take up to half up front, but it is my understanding that if there is any hiccup that would cause a party to want their money back, they can back-charge you for the amount. Maybe icsheeple can confirm?

Not that it matters but I wonder how much they sold that truck for. I knew a company selling a bunch of worn out R models going overseas years ago and made out well on them

They are all Union at the Baltimore ports.

I'm not sure how it is today,.. Back in the mid 90's when I first got out of trucking I got into Local 77 IUOE heavy equipment out of Marlow Heights. I was trying to switch over to the Local up there in Baltimore, 311 if I remember right,.. just checking in and parking machinery was paying $27.72 Union scale back then. Same scale I was getting to go out in the field and actually work those machines.

Its got to be worth something to someone over there in Africa.

From what I understand trucks like the one I delivered would just end up parted out over there and the rest scrapped. Seems like a lot of headache to get an old ratty truck,. but apparently (Real) Macks are highly sought after over there and they eat up trucks like candy.

Twic is one of those things I've been meaning to do now for I want to say 4 - 5 yrs. Not sure why I've dragged it out this long. I'll see whats involved when I get home, since I think I'll have some free time on my hands.

Carried one load for LTA Logistics out of Miami FL. It took forever to get paid. THIS may be the closest thing to Angie's list we can get.

Hey hurst I was one who dragged his feet in getting a twic. But it's too easy not to. I went to a place in Dallas and it took all of 10 min and a money order of $170 something check their website for exact amount. They mail it to your home address. It took 3 months for mine to come in. Fingerprints and some questions all under 10 min and your out the door. The Dallas location says they have truck parking but they don't. I pulled on the side street with a 53 spread flat and set the flashers.
