Does anyone know if loaded trailers are to be sealed or not per D.O.T. ?
Or does that only apply to hazmat loads?
Thanks.

I don't think sealing a trailer has anything to do with DOT. It just shows the receiver that the load was not tampered with during transport.
Are you referring to locking the trailer?CAXPT Thanks this. -
if a dot officer pull u over and inspect a seal cargo for any reason they will reseal the trailer.
CAXPT Thanks this. -
I haven't sealed a trl in 5 years now and no problems with DOT Or the local guys, and the only time I put a lock on is if I breakdown and trl is unattended. My Co looks the other way cause #1 I don't stop when loaded. #2 I'm the one closeing the doors and doing the bills. #3 I unload trl and no one else is there to verify seal#.

I guess most Co's I have worked for required their trailers to be sealed, and I, mistakenly, thought it was a D.O.T. requirement.
I thought I saw something regarding hazmat loads, but, can't find anything on the FMCS's web site. -
It depends on what i am carrying. I figure loads like those giant paper rolls dont really need a seal, would love to see someone walk off with one of those, lol! I do padlock my trailer regardless also when empty.

You areprobably thinking of padlocking hazmat when running California

I tried to seal my flatbed, but couldn't decide where to put the seal.
DrtyDiesel, CAXPT and dirtyjerz Thank this. -
This reminds me of a driver that did a flatbed relay at one of our terminals. It was a "high value" load on a flatbed that was to be tarped.
When we relay high value loads we have to put door locks on and a kingpin lock. This guy puts the door lock around the DOT bumper and puts the kingpin lock on. When I saw that I almost died laughing.

Some receivers require the trailer be sealed when you show up, and most of the time our security places a seal and we carry more, but for this one place, it's the 2nd stop and the first never checks, so I just put the seal on before going to the 2nd drop. The security guys at night do tend to listen to us drivers.
For awhile , we had to have the receiver remove the seal but they got over that nonsense in a couple of weeks.CAXPT Thanks this.
