For reefers, it seems that folks are trying to get more direct broker contacts, avoiding randomness. I can see that reefer loadboard postings can be ridiculously cheap, compared to the same lanes for vans, if of course the posted rates can be taken as any measure. I suspect much of the reefer freight is dealt directly e.i. broker - carrier calling each other...off loadboards. This is a loyalty model.
The abundance of dry van freight makes it possible for it to be posted on loadboards in large amounts. Leftovers or not, huge enough to create the spot market where single owner operates and small fleets are relaying on it. But this is a rat chase for sure, requires a lot of dexterity and ruthlessness when grabbing a broker by a throat mercilessly when occasion arises is a necessity, which in itself is a skill that not everybody has. This is a predator model and it is still very susceptible to market swings.
