I think you missed it....
If its rolling you are controlling nothing.
If you've slammed hard enough to go through the glass you are controlling nothing.
The chance of a being ejected and raining down on a crowd of bystanders is extremely low. In fact I've never heard of it happening... Not even on the show 101 ways of die'n.

So, every single accident is a roll over? So we don't need to wear a belt because in roll overs, we have no control? So why bother?
-
Finally you're seeing sense!
Not every accident is a rollover but when does a person get ejected? I would say on rollovers and goin thru windshield and in both cases staying in the seat will not allow you to take control (one is flipping and one is stopped and crushed).
Here's the thing... We mandate belts b/c
I) To protect me from myself
II) Protect others from my not wearing
III) Save on associated costs
If this is true there are many things that we should mandate that would have a greater impact on all 3 points ie. Smoking and booze (just 2 examples). -
Issac Newtons first law of motion (inertia)
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (including trajectory) unless acted upon by an outside force. For example, air resistance, terrain, gravity, and even a seat belt.
Two identical rigs collide head on at 62mph (100kph).
Driver A is wearing his seatbelt.
Driver B is too cool to wear it.
Upon collision, both trucks with the same inertial mass decelerate to zero in a fraction of a second and within a couple of feet.
Driver A's seatbelt locks in place and using the sternum and pelvis (both the strongest parts of the body) pulls the driver to a stop a fraction of a second later. Keeping him from colliding with multiple g force loads into the steering wheel and windshield.
Driver B continues his forward momentum at full speed into the steering wheel and windshield, breaking multiple bones and damaging the organs in the torso. His head hits the windshield, cracking the skull like an eggshell, the brain, also continuing at speed, smashes into the interior of the skull, resulting in a concussion and likely unconsciousness.
The fuel on both trucks ignites.
Driver A, because he is conscious and alert, is able to unbuckle or cut his seatbelt and exit the truck by the door or breaking a window. His cab is engulfed fairly quickly.
Driver B is unable to get out because he is severely compromised and possibly unconscious and as his cab is engulfed, is burned alive.
Driver A is able to go home and hug his wife and kids and has a real story to tell.
The family of driver B gets a knock on the door and it is the police telling a distraught wife and kids that their family is destroyed.
WHICH DRIVER WOULD YOU RATHER BE?!?
WAS IT WORTH BEING COOL TO DIE WHEN YOU DIDN'T NEED TO?!?
Something for the uneducated and the cool crowd. http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/carcr2.html

Very good. I like the part where you state "too cool"...
I was in a single vehicle accident where I would have been burned alive! I'm talking real life experience not citing laws of physics or saying my brothers next door neighbour's uncle knew a guy....it happene to ME! I broke my back and crushed my leg (compound breaks (plural)). Hey but as I text I'm on the correct side of the lawn.
I'm not saying we should remove seat belts but have a choice.
And why have zero people responded to the references to cigs 'n booze? Obviously we need gov't to save us from ourselves! -
Your example, not mine, 2 rigs collide head on at 60 mph, neither driver will be walking away from the crash. My entire point of seatbelts in trucks is, where are the crash studys with crash dummys. They aren't there because there aren't any crash standards for class 8 trucks in North America, because they are relatively unsafe and would fail. So mandating seatbelt use in an unsafe class 8 truck is kind of silly. Make them as safe as my 2010 Nissan Murano that my family and I got T boned in, which totaled both vehicles and everyone walked away, and I'll wear it everyday. Currently, I don't want to be sitting in the driver's seat when the steering column goes through it in a hard frontal collision.

Well, I'm done with this thread.
Don't wear your belts, I don't care. See you in the obits. -
Aww, come on now, I bring up a very valid argument and that's the best you got? Look at that steering column in the W9 in your pic the next time you have your hood open. There are no crumple zones, airbags, break away engine mounts, etc that you get in a darn base model Kia these days, yet the government thinks a seatbelt in class 8 truck is the miracle cure. It's not about safety in trucks, because if it was, we'd have cabs built for survivability. So if seatbelt laws aren't about safety, what are they about? $$$ Please show me a crash test study showing me I'm wrong and I'll be a convert.

Using made up scenarios does nothing to prove your point. So tell me, if driver A was unable to unbuckle or cut his seatbelt and exit the truck, which driver would you rather be, the one killed or at least rendered unconscious from hitting the windshield or the one lucid and fully aware of whats going on but can't get clear of the burning truck due to a jambed seat belt as both trucks are engulfed in flames. Reality is, people have been killed BECAUSE they were wearing a belt and people have been killed because they were not. That's a fact. Your odds of surviving are better WITH a seatbelt on but there are no guarantees.

Come on people it's really all about control and removing our basic right of freedom to choose, now to be honest I wear my seat belt whenever I drive, it. Keeps me from slumping over the wheel as I drive/nap.
