I recently retired from my 1st career and am currently pursuing a dream I've had since I was a wee lad - truck driving. I'm in a stretched highway tractor with a 25 ft box, straight truck. I run mainly the northeast US, doing generally two trips in and out per week and home weekends. It's a fairly low pressure job and company and the equipment is decent. Although the money is pretty much a non-issue for me as I have a very good pension, and am just doing this to fulfill a dream, I can't help but wonder about the compensation. In the trucking world would 32 cents per mile plus 20 dollars for picks and drops be a reasonable wage for this kind of job. I made a LOT more in my other career, in fact, a lot more with just my pension, and having done this for a month now, I can't help but think that this job deserves much higher wages. The other guys seem content, but I figure they are worth a lot more than that. Any comments??

32 cents, is pretty darn good, for a straight truck, I don't get much more than that hauling a 53' flat bed, wrestling tarps and straps. As for higher wages, you will see that all most of us do is whine and complain but no one wants to do anything. I would sit back and enjoy the scenery I've always said this would be the best job if one didn't "need" do do it .
