Has anyone have had experience with dealing with a 40k lbs Steel reel that is 10' wide and 16' long ? I was wondering how many chains should i be using and what is the best way to secure it.

Chain the hell out of it! I always looked at how the other drivers did it.
Coffey Thanks this. -
Hard to say without knowing which way the eye is. Guessing it's 10' in diameter. But it's just a guess. Which would mean it was loaded like a shotgun coil. With it being a "reel", there should be plenty of places to attach chains. Probably too big for coil racks though. But could possibly nail down chocks to help keep it from trying to roll.
Regardless, post pics when your done!Cattleman84, Coffey, ChevyCam and 2 others Thank this. -
Shotgun Coil Loading it is. According to my engineering calculation I will need 14 chains to secure it. using 3/8" Grade 70 Ratchet binders and chains.

How is a reel going to be 16' long without also being 16' tall? Or is it on an angle sitting on some sort of frame?

Wow and here I thought that I overly chained stuff down. Six should do it. Even weak chain with a work load of 5000 lbs, with six gives you a rating of 30k lbs, which exceeds regs. I had 8 chains on my morning load that was 76,000 lbs.Lepton1 Thanks this.
