well if you lock the doors and keep the motor running, the chances of someone trying to break in goes way down-they know someone IS IN THE TRUCK. the likelyhood of someone doing something at a truckstop is extemely low-but then again, keep your doors locked. now if your on the bad side of town, with your windows down and your doors unlocked-yes you are asking for trouble!

When I was driving NYC dedicated I would occasionally sleep at a consignee - used a tiedown strap through the door handles to supplement the door locks. Never had any problems - BTW it takes a good thief about 10 seconds to get a locked door open.

I've always been security conscious, or just plain paranoid while on the road.

I've been in some fairly rough areas. Although I've never had any issues, I never let my guard down for even a second.

I hide the laptop before leaving the truck, or simply pull the curtains. I generally have it out of sight before even pulling in. Rest areas, are fairly safe now days, as they are constantly full at night.

Truckstops, the back row is a last resort. Too many trailers have been broken into in some of the ones I frequent.

My all time favorite place to park at night...if there is enough room. The Chicken House :D While most drivers avoid them like the plague, I've never had an issue with any DOT regarding this. Other than being asked to move (politely I might add) in Louisiana on one occasion....small scale, they needed the room when they opened up LOL.

A personal concern: A former student of mine from the Bronx, described in detail how they used to rob drivers by using the sleeper vent and pumping fumes into the sleeper...then waited for the fumes to effect the driver enough that he couldn't put up a fight when they broke in the truck.

The only problem I ever ran into was in NYC. I got to the reciever about 45min before they opened and the docks by the street so I parked by them. While I was sitting in my cab...the next thing I saw was about 5 people at the back of my trailer. They had cut my lock and was opening the trailer doors. The truck was running so I just put it in gear and drove a couple of blocks till I spotted the police. :biggrin_25521:

You didnt back up towards them? :smt077 That might have cured them for the rest of their lives of doing the same thing again... then again, it might have impacted the rest of your life! Quick thinking on your part... did you lose any freight?

Yeah, if I ran over them and they lived...they would have sue me. No freight was lost, a couple of them had to jump out of the trailer though, as they was fixing to unload.
