Cupping is from inconsistent contact with the highway. Pretty much anything can be causing it. No one thing causes cupping. It is still an aggressive pattern. It is a cross between regional and highway. We usually see toe to heel wear on the lugs, which requires a criss cross rotation pattern to reverse the direction of rotation of the tires and switch axle position. If the shoulders are cupping check you aren't over inflating. Believe it or not, a lot of empty miles cause weird tire wear as the tire is running in an unloaded shape and running mostly on the lugs which is rough, not smooth, and will cause cupping as well as it makes the outer shoulder constantly lose contact with the road surface.
