What if you buy a truck and the engine blows up your first time out? If you want your own authority neither of those things you mentioned should stop you. Save up three months of pay. Only work with brokers that pay within a week.

I book my own loads and am leased on at a company. I have my own dry van and also run power only tow aways but borrowed a newer reefer from the company I leased on with for access to that freight. I'd wouldn't go into the outlay of buying a reefer myself not in my current financial circumstance. New(er) ones in good condition aren't cheap and I'm not bothering with a money pit, claim prone, worn out, waterlogged POS. Having this reefer gives me access to some easy money when trucks are tight, and money period when they're not. With my own authority I'd not have that flexibility so for me having my authority doesn't make sense. I prefer to pick/choose every move that gets made and negotiate each load that way I know everything is above the table. So that's the point. Individual circumstances dictate what does and doesn't make sense in a given operation.

You don't seem seem to understand what 3 months of operating expense is. It would definitely cover a blown engine. Saving up just 3 months of pay and starting your own authority is why people fail.Shanebklyn Thanks this.

Self-dispatching is overrated. This is not rocket science. If you know how to shop on Amazon or are tech savvy, you will be fine. The more you do it, the easier it gets.
Now, starting a trucking company is more complicated. It requires experience, lots of learning, solid personal money management, and lots of money saved up (about 50k). -
