i have spoken in length with an engineer at cummins about this. he said the same thing, no need to worry. he joked saying the automated trucks would never work because the new engines can’t stay running (properly). speculating that as soon as an automated truck sees a cel related to emissions it will put itself oos haha.
he has a ###### job. he is always driving new pickup trucks home that are wrapped in vinyl, with his laptop plugged in logging everything. he got his class a 2? years ago and has been driving any and every new cummins powered big truck around. they have a flatbed trailer with big steel weights strapped to it that they use for simulation. cool job, makes me wish i would’ve pursued automotive/diesel tech stuff.

The technology is out there to do it better than a human in any senerio. Even the stability controll system in new trucks can apply the break to only one tire position to gain stability, even to shift power to the opposite wheel if needed if it was a drive axle. And that is just a 'dumb' system that doesn't predict what is going to happen next.
Running down a steep icy grade? A computer could do it better hands down. We are too slow and can't possibly be able to comtroll that many wheels individually like that. All we have is one break pedal. Sure, we could do it, and do it relatively safely. But not as good as a computer could do it. If it was a race to the bottom and around a corner we would loose.
Don't kid yourself. The only reason it hasn't happened yet is because it isn't profitable for them... Yet.Makeajump Thanks this. -
I might've been hanging out with him! Ask him if he was in Marysville, OH a couple weeks ago. We were at a testing facility used by Honda.
