How long will it be until self driving trucks takes our jobs? Is it even worth it to get into trucking now knowing they could come out within a few years?

It's worth it to start a career in trucking now. You'll have plenty of time to save enough for a retirement or investments.
The Longshoremen are sweating it though because ports are going automated and they won't be needed any more. It's already started. Guess they'll need robots to harass truckers and leave trash all over the merchant ships. One of the ports is already almost fully automated.Last edited: Apr 15, 2017
Randy0980 Thanks this. -
They still can't get the self driving cars off the ground so it will be a long time before they do it for trucks. It will most likely start at large DCs with them replacing yard jockeys, but even then it's a big leap from use on private property with a controlled environment to out on the mean streets with the texters.
Randy0980, Boattlebot and Chinatown Thank this. -
Said it before I'll say it again. They can barely get a prius down the road on its own in "perfect" California weather. It's gunan be a long time till they can get a rig 3000 miles arcross the country starting in heavy rain and ending in a blizzard....

This has been a topic of discussion within my family. My brother in law works in the industry and my father in law works in robotics and animation. My brother in law has been worried about this for quite a while especially now that tests are to be conducted. This is what my father in law had to say.
No matter if trucks become automated or not they will still require and operator and have a human presence in the vehicle at all times. He said that although you won't be technically driving anymore, that these positions will be higher paying because of the technical aspect of the job.
He said this has happened in multiple industries including oil refining, food and other manufacturing. He said this next 10-20 years is going to be exciting times ashe. Has already seen some of the test trucks and the systems they utilize.Randy0980 Thanks this. -
I'd worry more about trains, especially if you're stuck dealing largely with cheap non-perishable or non time sensitive freight that needs to move more than 800 miles.

Dude, I pass by the Michigan vehicle test track where they test these seeing them test these cars. I've seen them on the road, they are there and they work.
So I hope we can get these trucks on the road to get rid of these idiot drivers who can't drive a car let alone a truck. -
I like to think of this new technology like an airplane when it starts out. You control the truck through the city and backing up to the docks.. But on the interstate or country roads... auto pilot??? One can only wish
-
When they do hit the road they will cause driver pay to plummet in which casebonly idiot drivers will work for low pay.

That's what I'm worried about.
