Both are based on the same technologies, and hardware and software. No advantage, and many disadvantages, to have a robot drive a truck.

They will first replace warehouse spotters. That in itself will be quite an accomplishment. Then they will replace up to 100 - 300 miles runs at night - simple - terminal to terminal lines - special ramps will be built to accommodate highway exiting. Then after new driving codes and protocols will have been imposed on people, also electronically - such as never drive above the speed limit, or never use left lane unless passing....these robotic trailers (no cabin is needed really) will be allowed to drive further. The humans will only be making deliveries and pick ups, but even then not everywhere.... OTR jobs could be gone within 15- 20 years - if there was a political agenda and pressure on this...just like it was with the EPA / CARB staff on trucks now... That's my vision, anyway...Look at me, I am like Alvin Toffler ha ha ha.

Yea they're going to try it and it will be the end of whichever company does it. We do not have the roads to support this kind of crap what is the camera going to do when it's shaking like a leaf from a pothole.

LOL we have that now in ON. We effectively have a dual speed limit...trucks are limited by ECM to 65 and cars at 75+. The trucks are stacked up nose to tail in the right lane (law of unintended consequences that causes many more deaths than speed ever did) and vehicles are ALWAYS passing them. Some pass at 66 and some pass at 90. Both lanes are always full. And God help everyone if a truck slows to 64.....10 trucks behind him pull into the left lane. I simply cannot see how a computer can adjust to these constant dynamics. Hills, curves, ice, snow, rain, potholes, construction, oversize loads, emergency vehicles, snow plows. Just where are all these robot trucks going to park when their sensors can't handle weather conditions? Anyone that thinks robot trucks wont create carnage needs to drive in ON. We already have them in the form of inexperienced tailgating steering wheel holders from countries that have never seen snow.

Micromanagement of driving. Everybody will be forced...electronically to adjust their speeds/vehicle to vehicle distance/any other required behavior to existing circumstances in a given geographical area...commands will be given by some algorithm via satellites to every vehicle within 100 yards. The algorithm will not allow any speed above a circumstantial dynamic speed limit or passing...might as well put the vehicle on auto-pilot. In other words, the Matrix will take care of you.
LOL Look at me the visioneer! Darn! I watched to much Jetsons as a kid....

A computer can't keep up with all that, that is why they'll never be much more than a novelty item. I can't wait for swift or somebody to try it you want to see rates go up, megas getting sued into oblivion will do it.

The average speed to go fro Coast to Coast with robotic trucks could be only 35 mph or so but it is non-stop driving, no-parking needed...perhaps they going to be powered by electricity - recharging every 600 miles at special terminals. It is horrible when you think about it....what are so many people driving trucks for a living going to do? Manufacturing replaced by robots, trucking replaced by robots, ....everybody needs to go Law Schools now!

They would quicker come up with flying trucks... autonomous flying semis. It would simpler, I think.
