Frustrating thing about this is that you’ll see full size excavators and other types of steel tracked machinery posted for a step deck with ramps every single day. It’s like madness. If they call me and I try to explain, that this will never work with the kind of trailer they are trying to use. They often say, oh it’s not a problem you can put 48k lbs on a step deck and this is way less . Than I know I’m talking to someone who wouldn’t recognize the type of the trailer he’s talking about when pointed at in real life.PPLC, Gearjammin' Penguin, W923 and 8 others Thank this.

Famous words that always lead to a problem “oh it’s not a problem, I’m sure you can handle it. I’ve had this same unit loaded and delivered plenty of times by trailers exactly like yours.” They just want that thing loaded (or half loaded) on the trailer to collect their fee/commission and make it our problem.Gearjammin' Penguin, CAXPT, cke and 2 others Thank this.

A month or so ago, I watched a big excavator hauler in port of Tacoma try to use his ramps to load the brand new machine and get nowhere. Used the dock instead an hour later and I’m guessing he was flustered. Traks going left and right with a 9” drop to get onto his trailer. One trak dropped faster and bit on the trailer and did a small spin before a full tip over and drop onto the trailer and then the cement below. He probably had a broken arm, but seemed fine otherwise. But $1mm machine and $1mm trailer severely damaged and or destroyed. These self-loads demanded by shippers/brokers just seem archaic to me. Heavy Machinery changes every year and most need at least a basic intro in todays array of electronic equipment, but most truckers are working with the same skill set they’ve used for years. Doesn’t add up.Gearjammin' Penguin, Blue jeans, CAXPT and 3 others Thank this.
