I have always believed that a bright fashlight with a strobe function works great to blind while you flee. No sense in trying to fight unless you have NO OTHER CHOICE to survive. I 7yr in the Corps and combat time, as confident as I am in my ability to defend myself, you will NEVER catch me in a fight unless it is my LAST OPTION. I will always flee (or attempt to talk my way out of it) if there is anyway possible.

Blinding them with strobe lights work great and can be cheap. They will even fit in your pocket:

If you have to fight then self defense items hidden in plain sight work well. Especially in NJ (I swear they are the worst in the nation about S.D. stuff)!!!

Keychain knuckles (some say they are illegal in NJ but I am not sure)

Lead Density ball cap (sap hat...also illegal in NJ):

Pepper spray items. They even make cell phone cases these days with pepper spray built in:

Again if you are in NJ you cannot posses pepper spray if you are a felon. You also cannot posses over 3 oz or that is a crime and the canister must be pocket size

Another self defense item for ladies is the knuckles cell phone case. Looks like a decoration on your case until you use it

Like others have said. Be aware and avoid it in the first place
