Selling Stuff from Storage Unit

Op, donate your belongings or talk to the storage unit manager. If you’re a couple years in already & going to be a couple more years, you will spend more in rental fees than your would to replace everything.

 

Find someone in the area that buys entire estates. Get a price on selling the entire unit at one price. Let them sell at their garage sale.

 

Also, if you have any computers in storage you should run by and pull them out before doing anything. You really don't want that personal data in just random peoples hands. Or at least wipe the hard drive so all the data is gone.

 

i been thru that. unless it's a DoD wipe, things can still be found.

when ever i throw away a pc, and in fact, last month i did, i remove the hard drive, strip it apart, remove the platters and bend them a few times using a bench vise.. when i start hearing cracking noises, i know then that the platter is useless.

i also remove other parts that i might need in the future like those small screws, nuts etc.

the hard drive i had was the old type, and i can not use it in my SATA pc.

besides, i got something like 2 terabytes of storage now as it is.

 

The ethical thing to do is figure out what to do with the stuff and then clean the unit out. Not leave it for someone else to deal with.

He could simply remove any items he'd like to keep then call 800-junk and pay them to dispose of everything left.

 

I was going to recommend a program called dban (Darik's Boot and Nuke). It has several ways to wipe the hd, including 2 DOD styles. I decided not to mention it as the website has gone commercial, although I did find the original free version.

 

Mayby take care of it on vacation time? Know its a pain, got to do what you got to do. Video it..good times at the storage unit for future laughs.

 

Yeah we’re going to have to hold onto all our important papers, old laptop, etc. the rest is mostly old furniture and appliances we bought used anyway.

My wife’s friend wants the 2 industrial sewing machines, so there’s a buyer for that.

The only other thing I really want to sell is a Harvest Right home freeze dryer that we barely even used. It was about $2500 new.

The rest we can just get rid of for all I care. Maybe the bed would fetch a decent price, but not a priority.

How long did you drive before you put your stuff in storage and how long have you had the storage since then?
Any advise on OTR with spouse?

On your unit I would get a U haul and get it to the salvation army and ask for a tax donation slip. Just plan on boxing anything you want to keep and shipping it to somewhere safe as well as a trip to the dump if need be for things goodwill will not take.

 

Not only ethical, but some places probably bill you a disposal fee.
