Guy I used to work with from out east who helped build a few of those performance engines told me the pre-EGR 14L Series 60 was among the best when it came to putting down big power. 3" input shafts on the transmissions too apparently.

They've got to be using special all steel alloy pistons in those engines. Maybe even superalloy's like in turbine engines.

Years ago, there was some team that named their black smoke and fire billowing pull tractor "Al Gore's Nightmare".

Get's me to wondering if pulls are even legal in Cali. LOL Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen one being televised from the snowflake state.

Why? Water injection and cold water aftercoolers mean that they dont run extreme EGTs.

Older video, I'm sure they squeeze more out of the engines today.
And this is "just" a single turbo pro-stock tractor motor @ 680(?) cubic inch.

    More recent:

You can clearly see that part of the water is injected in compressor inlet

    Copied from their facebook:

The Macksimus Prime team out of Painesville, Ohio, campaigns two 1985 Mack Superliners powered by 998 c.i E9 V8 engines. Each truck produces in excess of 5000 horsepower with a 4 turbocharger setup making approx. 180psi of boost.

Anything pre emissions you can get some big time power out of.

Some of the older engines you can turn over way past 2300. If you can get to or above 3000 and keep it there, you can do some pulling. It's just a matter of waiting for something to break or the total traction to fail. Whichever is first.

It's what is going on on top of the pistons that I'm talking about. Water injection is only good up to a certain threshold, then it's all about adding lots more injected fuel. At some point, piston tops and exhaust valves start melting. After cooling has no effect before it gets out of the cylinder.

It is interesting to note that even the most over-fueled black smoke and fire billowing diesel engines, just about to the point of melting down, are only burning a fraction of the oxygen available in those cylinders. Eventually the inside of that engine gets to be a diesel fuel fired cutting torch. LOL

Actually excess fuel runs cooler, lean is where parts start getting burnt up.

It would be foolish for teams to run these engines with unreliable setups, but I guess for people that don’t push limits it’s hard to understand.

    Oxbow and KVB Thank this.
