What would you say if I told you I can operate heavy equipment while under the influence of Dilaudid or Morphine Sulphate?? (never mind, I know the answer)

Guess what: I can. Without a single problem. Ever. I can even get hellaciously high on weed and drive better than 90% of the population can sober.

    I'm gifted that way.

And guess what?? I DON'T DRIVE WHILE STONED. I won't drink or drive, ever. Hell, the last drink I had was three weeks ago, and it was just one drink after work.

And, no: I'm not on the morphine drugs anymore: we found out the migraines were from another source, and put me on Imitrex, which has pretty much saved my life as far as migraines are concerned. Not to mention the morphines were losing effectiveness.

But I do have similar anxiety issues to TallOkie, and the antidepressant combats that very effectively, and makes me a more effective person overall.

The point of this is you can't lump everyone into the same pile because they're medicated: in most cases the medication makes it possible for them to be productive and effective people, and helps prevent problems that lead to disasters. The ones you SHOULD be worried about are the ones who AREN'T diagnosed, who AREN'T properly medicated, or who are self-medicating with alcohol or other drugs. Those are the ones who will eventually cause the problems that you and your ill seem to want to blame on those who aren't the problem to begin with.

So have some compassion and understanding. Please.

Granted: but if you were under control and dealing with it, and you found out you were passed over because you said it, you'd be slightly upset, right?

Any company should be asking if the problem is controlled, and want proof (hence my earlier retraction).

But this also makes the case for "keep yer mouth shut", because otherwise you end up one of the truck stop beggars. :(

    Guys,

In order to be on these type of meds and drive, you need a note that says he/she is safe to drive while on these medications by a doctor. There are exemptions on which meds you can and not drive on. You can not drive and take shots of morphine. If you go to get a random DOT physical, the doctor has a right to ask why and may require such a note. Its all about being stable with both your meds and said problems. I advise all people seeking to get their CDL to contact their prospective company's doctor to get a list of medications you can not drive on. Some are pickier than others. Most of the time they want you to be stable for a period of x amount of years.

I have Aspergers Syndrome. Every time I get a DOT physical, its how long have you been taking such and such. Do you have a note from your doctors stating its SAFE (key word here folks) to drive. Before getting my job at the place I work now (non CDL), I was asked how long ive been on my meds. I had to prove I was stable before even getting the drug test form. As one poster said, it all boils down to being safe and stable. That's my .02.

I get what you're saying. But the final decision always is on the company and with the glut of morons they've been getting since freight picked up, they probably don't want anymore liability, you know?

    WOW.

Maybe I'm not the "ideal" driver in your mind, but the point is, I'm a driver, I have depression, and I get out there and do what needs to be done to take care of me and mine. I have a CDL, a clean medical, and I will utilize the tools that I have to lead a GREAT life, including taking my medication, as much as that seems to distress you. I've made it a point in my life to take charge and do what I need to do, along with the 14.8 million depression patients in the US, some of whom are even, gasp, truck drivers. If you'd like to meet me and judge for yourself the extent of my "mental issues," just let me know when you'll be in Indy. Coffee's on me.

I know your pain brother... Not because I have Aspbergers: my elder son has it, but he wasn't diagnosed early enough in his life to get assistance with it, and his is bad enough where it doesn't take much for him to slip into that "world inside his head" and spiral out of control.

And you're right: I have notes from my doctors for my antidepressant, my blood pressure meds (two, one just doesn't cut it), and my migraine meds.

All the doctor that did my physical asked was if the meds made me excessively sleepy. Since I don't have any problems with excessive daytime sleepiness on my meds, I was cleared.
