my point of what i did was to find out just how the big companies work when it comes to their drivers ... i had a small company offer me a position .. i explained to them what i wanted to do with the big ones and they gave their blessing and said when i was done to call them back and they will dispatch me ... well . i called them back and went on the road a few days later ... you have to find a small company to work with .. they are the only ones who are not out for the #### that the big ones want you to do ..

i got to know a few when i went to JB and swift orientation .. out of 48 at jb hunt that were there ... 9 got hired and there is only 1 left there and i talked to him everyday and he told me yesterday that this friday is it for him and he was going to another company .. so they all have had bad time with JB .. they were ICs and ran anywhere from 1800 to 2200 when they had a great week and most of the tiime since i think the biggest paycheck between them all was only 198.00 for the week .. and that was from a guy who ran alot that week before ...

your best bet is to go to a smaller company and run for them like i am now .. i am getting great miles that seem to be endless .. i can run everyday all day as long as i am within my hours and there is always a run for me to take ...

i had a truck break down and within 20 minutes of calling my dispatcher he had a tow truck on the way to the terminal to tow me a good truck and tow the bad one back ... the tow truck had to tow it 6 hours to where i was and take the other back .. so he was on his #### that day ...

only prob i have now is that the dispatcher is young and not so experienced which can be great for the drivers cause we can keep him on his toes about his we the drivers need things done ..

he has had a few drops that were a few hundred miles apart only to come back near where i just was to do another drop which is ok cause we get paid for them miles, but all in all he is a good guy and is learning quick ...

i always said it in this forum and will say it again ... the only way to get ahead in a truck is to go to a small company ...

the company in which i run for has terminals in a few states and are always hiring ... mainly in the northeast and the southeast ... not too much anywhere else ...

take some god advise .. small companies are the way to go and there and alot of small companies out there who only have a few trucks and some who have less than 250 .. they are the ones i always wanted to get into ..

another thing you can do for now and this is also a good idea is to call your local union rep and ask where they have any positions open for a cdl A driver and run locally and make more money doing so ..

i am home at least 4 times a week if only for 10 to 12 for the break , but that is ok .. i run virginia to boston and all states in between which is another great thing .. if anything happens at home, i am never more than a 7 hour drive to get home ...

Good post, Bubba. I have a problem with only one little bit of it, though. If I find out a company is always hiring, I drop it from consideration like a hot potato. But I see your company is doing that constantly only in the northeast region. That can be overlooked, unless the shortage there means I'd have to go to the northeast to make up for the slack.

Calling a union rep is the route I'd take today for sure. Unions are the way, absolutely. I've done the non-union thing in the past, and I wouldn't do it again.

Responding to the original post, I demanded that JB Hunt clear me BEFORE I EVER took the trip to California. BTW, the accomodations at the center in CA were TERRIBLE. The food wasn't so great either, and if you wanted to eat at night, there definitely were no freakin' vouchers issued to you, you paid out of pocket.
I personally think JB HUNT is either the worst or the second worst trucking company on the entire planet. What trucking company thinks their employees are going to be happy when they come along one day and just cut your pay by up to $400 PER WEEK?
When I was going through their ridiculously long, excrutiating orientation, people were being let go for all kinds of reasons. One guy was told he wasn't eligible because he had some sort of medical condition - and then the next day, they realized they had made a mistake and told the WRONG PERSON he had to go home - which he already had.
This company is a JOKE at BEST.

Outfits like JoBHunt just need to go ahead and start researching ways to build a Frankenstein Freightliner, or Frankenliner. With this truck, a trucking company uses a driver's corpse to "drive" it. All the outfit needs to do is rig up some sort of controlling devices, such as a joystick, cameras, and servo motors and woila!

A Frankenliner would solve many problems at trucking companies, such as determining who is qualified and who isn't, as all drivers would suddenly be equal. Say goodbye to having to bring people to orientations, as well as certain driver demands such as vacations, sick leave, and home time. Corpses don't demand time off or fringe benefits, nor do they need to take drug tests. Health exams wouldn't be necessary, and neither would be health advice for drivers. Why show health advice vids to drivers who are already dead? The companies would just have to bring the trucks in regularly for the application of odor-suppressing lime.

This is how far some companies will have to go to solve probelms they have no intention of solving nor even want to solve.

I just wanted to tell you about my JB Hunt experience.
I was being constantly called by "recruiters". After turning them down for months, I was in need of a job. So I decided to sign on with them. The orientation was in East Brunswick NJ. I chose to drive there insted of staying at the motel because of things I needed to get done at home. (1hr 15min commute one way)
It started on Tuesday and went for 3 days. The first day was nothing but paperwork that I already filled out. Then we had a road and backing test. The road test was a joke. A simple ride around the block and the backing test was a simple 45degree backup. Then came the Physical and urine test. The people who worked in the "clinic" were rude and were just there to get a paycheck. The doctor wasn't much better. Gave me an attitude.
The second day was all classroom with videos and the like. Also we had to call our "investigator". When he returned my call he said that everything looked good and I was ready to go.

On the last day, we got our fleet manager number and pretty much wrapped things up.
I was told to call my fleet manager about a tractor assignment. (I was planning to leave orientation with a tractor and a load) She told me that there was nothing available and I should go home and call her the following day.

I called her and still nothing available. Being it was Friday, I figured I will wait until Monday to call. I called on Monday morning and after she gave me an attitude about not calling in over the weekend still nothing available. I called all that week and was told the same thing. After the second week of this, I decided that if they wanted me to drive for them, THEY CAN CALL ME!

This has left a bad taste in my mouth about driving a truck anymore and I decided to give it up.

Did anybody else have the same expeience as I did?

I wish you could print that on the front cover of some big paper......When you go through orientation for any job, there should actually be a job........Is it the same as most industries where the owner is driving the new Merladies-E class or some stuff and everybody else is working 3 jobs?

well, you know how with JB HUnt you have to cal your investigator, well at swift i didnt have to do it .. all was verified before i went there. only reason i left is that they told me, with 8 yrs experience i needed a trainer and was going to put me with a child who only had his own truck and cdl for less than a few months and i said **** that and left ... the guy sitting next to me only drove 64 days and had a roll over and didnt need one, go figure.. but i would not give up on trucking cause of the B.S. companies out there .. there are good companies and depending on where you live, you can find a good one out there...

since you live in PA , do you have 2 yrs experience, if you do , let me know i will tell you who i run for and you can give them a try, we can run out of the same terminal ....

maybe swift wasn't looking for someone to drive a truck, maybe they wanted someone who could up hold the tradition of wrecking them. The next time you talk to someone from swift, ask them for me"does the company hire people that bad at driving or do they order those trucks with damage already on them?" I'm just curious.:biggrin_2552:
