The speed thing doesn't really make that much of a difference because not many opportunities do you go above 65 mph. We are talking maybe 30-60 munutes a day which can be easily made up by staying in the seat more. Not every trip pushes your miles to the daily max. You can average 500 a day and still get your miles.
I would take a close look at the companies operation, running lanes and drop/hook %.
You can even look at their company snapshot and divide the number of trucks into their reported miles divided by 52 to get an idea of weekly miles.
Go here to do that...

Like numbers said, that experience, you can work anywhere. Don't hesitate to flood the market with your resume.
Good luck! -
These come from my qualcom logs
3/26 568 miles 9:51 drive time
3/27 671 miles 10:51 drive time
3/28 629 miles 10:31 drive time
3/29 340 miles 6:02 drive time.
Alot of that was on Ill 59 from I88 to Joliet Ill. That was a stupid move on my part. Got burned when I got to the final shipper for the week. Got in at 3:15. Told me the load wouldn't be ready until 8:30. Immediately went to off-duty and then SB to take my 10 hour reset. Allowed me to start my day at 1:30 AM to actually get home earlier had I tried to run out my 14 hour clock.
3/30 609 miles 10:52 drive time. Lot of time in St Cloud MN today.
I left Monday at 9 AM and got home today at 4 PM. The truck runs out at 67 mph on cruise or foot. My lightest load all week was 24,000 lbs and I got 5.3 mpg on that load. I also had a 25-30 mph quartering headwind the whole trip. Otherwise, I was at 78-79,000 lbs all week running back and forth from Minneapolis to Aurora / Joliet Ill across Wisconsin either on I94/I90 or US52/I90. Most of the rest of the week I was from 5.98, 6.07 and 6.17 MPG -
Unless you're a trainer I would think its almost impossible to make a real good paycheck with elogs as well as low miles to begin with. You could make a comfortable living on elogs and slow trks if companies did'nt make drivers sit and if they had a pre load waiting for them.

Had I not gotten burned on Thursday with the shipper, I would have easily gotten 3000 miles for the week. Had I not needed to be home for my parenting time with my 11 yo daughter this weekend, I was pushing to stay out over the weekend and running for 11 days straight.
ETA:
This weeks AVERAGE speed for the week is 58 MPH.Last edited: Mar 30, 2012

If someone can't live comfortably on $50k/yr, then I think they probably have too much stuff to pay for.
$2200 mortgage? That's too high. I would move.
You make $57k and your wife STILL has to work??
Your kids can pay their own way through college...they will appreciate it more that way anyways.
I would say, get smaller house, sell some of your "stuff", eat out less often, and only "help" your kids through college....a little.
Then your wife can stay home, help ya'll SAVE money, AND ....be around more for your kids.
Part of the problem with this country is there are too many working parents.
Mom and Dad's working so they can buy more, bigger, and better things.
Who's taking care of the kids??
It's a cultural crisis...in my opinion
just sayin....xFreeWord420x and pathfinder1361 Thank this. -

I run legal for the vast majority of it.
I haul oversize loads, so night time is a no no for me anyways most of the time.
My average sleeper/off duty time is 12hrs, not the required 10.
I get paid % of the load, and not mileage. This lets me run fewer miles for more money, and not have to chase miles like most do.
I make enough to have paid off the truck, and for my wife not to work in all the time we have been married. Allowing her to look after the kids etc. She actually does volunteer work at our younger kids school, which makes her feel very good about life.
Only thing we owe money on is the 18yrs left on our mortgage. Truck, Range Rover, Jeep, toys.....all paid for. No bank loans and no credit cards.
As said already, live within your means and dont fall into the "toy trap" where you think you have to have that $400k house, brand new pickup, boat, motorcycle, and so on.
So it CAN be done legally, and without the governments intervention. Just requires some brain power and hard work is all. The more we let the government interfere with our living, the harder it is going to be to make that living honestly. I dont think the DOT cops are stupid, they know full well how long it takes to get from point A to point B. The problem lies in the idiotic short term benefits of the companies that allow it. Seeing as pretty much every truck now has Q/comm etc, they can see in a heartbeat who is running illegally and who is pretty much on the right path.
Until those companies are FORCED to comply, laws are going to get stricter.
Most of the companies running e logs are doing so due to unsatisfactory safety ratings or poor internal compliance issues.
Just my .02
