What is the advantage to having the fuel tanks set back?
Is it just taking weight off the front?

It takes weight off the steers and puts it on your drives. It is good and bad all at the same time. I am heavy on my drives due to the tanks and all my flatbed equipment, but at least I can work with it as where of the weight was on the steers, I'd be stuck.

even with set back tanks and set forward axle i am usually ok because of my spread axle trailer....actually never been heavy on drives...even over 80k

ig you got a big cat under the hood and a set back axle...set back tank is usually a must

    Nikosdad and SHC Thank this.

The big advantage is that you can run the trailer closer to the cab, reducing the air gap. This helps on improving your MPG's.
