I'm in a prostar using factory antenna wires to a mirror mount. Running a cobra 29 Ltd classic and a 3' firestick II antenna with an adjustable tip. I've got the tip as low as it will go and still getting SWR reading of just below 2 on ch 1 and well above 3 on channel 40. Everything I've read says to lower antenna but out do it lower the antenna? Doesn't appear this antenna was meant to be physically cut. Any advise would help.

You can cut them but before you do check with an external meter if you are using the radios built in meter. Second you are using existing coax, are you also using existing mount? If this is a used truck and you are using existing hardware it would be a good idea to dissassemble mount, coax and stud to make sure there is no corrosion. Make sure all connections are tight. Then check with external meter before even considering cutting the antenna.

Yes, all of the stuff looks factory set up, total figure out how to get into the mirror housing to get to mount and coax. I'm pretty sure the mount is rusty as it has been left exposed for a month or so that I know of.

    And thanks for the advice

I've thought of doing that. Running a dual antenna set up off each mirror. New mounts and wires. Only thing stopping me is I don't know how to run the wires. Not to good at that short of thing. Plus this prostar only has a loose strap to secure my cb n the slot for it. Can't even pull the strap tight cause the removable shelf above the cb compartment I can't remove. The company thought it would be a great idea to mount some kind of small computer to it with short wires so the shelf is no longer removable.

just be creative and look around for ways to route coax without kink or pinching it..

3 foot is kind of short and might be difficult to get a decent match.
Did you check your grounds first?

Don't have a meter to check it. When I get back to the terminal I was planing on borrowing a latter from the shop and removing the mirror cover and check the mount and everything to make sure it's tight and look for rust and what not.

Corrosion between stud and mount may not be obvious until you remove stud from mount then you see the crusty white/green film that has formed between stud and mount.

    rabbiporkchop and Bavile Thank this.

to save yourself the hassle, just buy 18' of coax, a new mount and some mini bungees. run the coax out the passenger door to the new mount, and bungee your radio into the compartment. or put Velcro on the bottom of the radio and the bottom of the compartment
