You need to buy inline 6 and have a laptop with windows 10.Then you have to download the pirated version of Insite lol.I have the link for the pirated version and instructions as well.
Here’s the link for the inline 6 https://m.obd2tool.com/goods-10289-Best-Quality-Cummins-INLINE-6-Data-Link-Adapter-Cummins-Diesel-Truck-Diagnostic-Tool.html
Also you need to let them know you need the six pin with it.I didn’t realize that it came standard with the 9 pin.

Much appreciated. Now I can get to the bottom of my boost issue without throwing parts at it.

    ... hopefully.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does "running the overhead" entail?

I always assumed it was just setting the valve lash but obviously there's more to it than that.

It is. But in the case of certain engines, the valve train also controls the Jakes and injectors. So for an ISX, you need a certain amount of lash on the Jakes, and a specific torque pre load on the injectors.

A 7mm Allen Wrench works well for setting the engine brake clearance.

Setting injectors is only on the earlier Isx, isn't it? You just set valve lash and brakes on cm2250 and cm2350, is my understanding. But instead of just setting lash so it feels right with feeler gauge the manual says to insert proper feeler gauge and tighten adjuster screw down to 5 inch lbs and lock then remove feeler. Atleast that is how I read it.?

The CM870 and CM871 and older are mechanical injectors driven by a camshaft require the adjustment and timing. CM2150 and newer moved to commonrail and switched to ECM(electronic) injection for timing. The 5lb torque wrench is supposed to be used for consistent drag on lash settings. The tool is kind of fumbly but I recommend my journey guys use it until they get a good feel for the drag of the guage. Once the feel is learned the veterans leave the torque wrench in the tool box.

I have a Water's gauge I had never used til I set overhead on my cm2350 this week. I remember hearing of guys using a Water's gauge on the old 855's. Was that for the same process? I don't do it enough to retain the "feel" without second guessing myself. This is the 1st Cummins I have done. Done several push rod Cats and Deere. There is more to that feel/drag from one engine to another due to things like wear in bridges. Etc. This Isx is the easiest and quickest of any engine I have ever done. I kinda like using the Water's Torqe Watch.

To much barring for me, like it when you only have to bar to two spots!
