Good idea.
I was thinking of about 4 ft of rebar in the ground with solid copper wire to the mount.
I have some copper grounding studs from when i used to install satellite systems that would clamp good to the rebar and PL259.
Still waiting on my antenna.......dang slow shipping!
Plus i'm getting an amp from vintech (here on TTR) to give me a little more power.
Got my Times Microwave LMR coax today.
A couple more weeks and i should be up and running.
Setting up a mobile as a base.

75 feet of wire? You could probably have shunt fed that wire and had a rather good antenna.
RF grounds are measured in inches, not feet.handlebar Thanks this. -
The bottom of the mast will be about 12 ft from the ground.
Could i just ground the mast to some rebar? That would save a ton on copper wire. I would not have to buy as much. -
it wont hurt to invest in a good low pass TVI filter if you are going to run that amp. that way it will all but eliminate the interference to any neighbor that is close. and that will keep them happy, and when they are happy, uncle charlie is none the wiser

Thanks,
Yea i was thinking about that. I have a neighbor right behind my shop and was worried about interference.
They have already complained on me once for my air compressor running at night when i was working on something.
Being my antenna will be on the back of the shop roof it would be about 100 ft from their house.
It is some old lady that complains on everything in the neighborhood......lol!
I should have it up next weekend if i find some mast. Radio Shack is expensive on their cheap mast...
I want the base of the antenna about 10 ft above the roof line of the building.
That will put the tip of the antenna at near 40 ft.
Ebay has plenty of mast but the shipping is high......i have to find some local. -
Check places like Home Depot for "top rail"; it's the pipe used along the top of chain link fences. There are a few minor differences, but it works just fine, and it's about a third the cost of Radio$hack masting.
Also check your local hardware store for masting as well as the top rail. Even if they don't stock it, they may be able to get it for you within a few days.EZ Money Thanks this. -
Is there a sprinkler supply house near you you cold get some schedule 10 galv sprinkler pipe.
EZ Money Thanks this. -
I found out my neighbor has a stack of top rail fence pipe.....free!
That will get me started anyway!
Good tip on the sprinkler pipe too....Thanks all! -
I run a Cobra 29 LTD Black Chrome w/ an RFX75 at 80 watts, 102" whip attached to the top of a 12ft wooden 4"x4" placed in ground beside my house.
I live in Troy, NY and regularly talk out to the Virgin Island, Georgia, Carolinas, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, and on occasion California.
The elevation of your antenna is the most important issue when talking on the skip.
