Right. And that's why I'd like to explore a way to keep running under the company I am leased on to while I wait for my IFTA account.
To answer your question, I currently pay my own bobtail and comp through OOIDA.
I pay for liability and cargo provided by the current carrier I'm leased on to.
Can I not apply for my own IFTA account and use my carriers information for the insured truck requirements?
I'm thinking I get the MC but don't activate it yet.
I apply for my IFTA account using my current carrier details.
Wait for 3 months will the filing processes.
Once my IFTA account is approved, I leave the carrier, get my own insurance on my truck and trailer and activate my authority, and be able to keep rolling with minal down time as insurance is approved and applied

Gotcha. So i registered my truck for 2022 in OCt for $1600, using apportioned plates and my carriers IRP account.
I could theoretically set up my IRP account go to the tax board this week, and opt to reregister my truck, eating the 7 months I have left on my current registration.
This would give me my own IRP account, can card and plates, still running under my current carrier, apply for the MC/DOT, and apply for IFTA using my current carriers insurance and numbers.
    Possible?

No. Here's the thing - it doesn't matter who's paying for the insurance. It matters whose insurance it actually IS. Like I said, things have to be done in a certain order, and I mean they will not let you start the next thing until the first thing is "approved and done with".

    1. You need to get your MC number.
    2. You need your own insurance on your own rig.
    3. 21 days later, they activate your MC number.
    4. Now you can actually run intrastate, as long as you've satisfied your state's intrastate requirements.
    5. While that's happening, you file for IRP (apportionment)
    6. You literally have to wait until it's completely approved!! (yes, this part sucks balls and takes forever)
    7. Once it's approved, you IMMEDIATELY ON THE SAME DAY file for IFTA. (this part also sucks balls and takes forever, but you can't file for IFTA until your IRP is approved)
    8. ........profit.

So I may be sitting for 3 weeks waiting between insurance and MC activation?
And then as long as my intrastate requirements are met I can only run intrastate while waiting for my IFTA account to be approved, which in Texas can take 90 days? Incredible.

Now let's get a little more granular, because there's actually stuff that has to take place in the middle:

You just got your MC. Now you have a rig, and you get insurance on it. Before that "21 days" takes place, your insurance company files a BMC-91. They should already know to do this, but make sure they do it immediately.

Then, you need another form. A BOC-3. From what I gather, it's basically a form showing you have legal representation in the lower 48. You can pay people a hundred bucks or so to file this form. HOWEVER, the easiest way to do it is get a year membership with OOIDA. It's $45, and they will file your BOC-3 for free. On top of that, they can help you with all kinds of new O/O advice.

@Midwest Trucker and @Ridgeline could possibly help with other questions if they feel like it, as they are fleet owners.

@D.Tibbitt is currently going through this process.

These people are under no obligation to help, but they (and many others here) have a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

My numbers are hazy now, but it was like 60 days on IRP, and 44 days on IFTA. But that was COVID numbers.

Once you get insurance attached to your MC, it's a minimum 21 days no matter what. And yes, it's F'n ######## how long the rest of it takes. But as long as you get Texas numbers (which takes like five minutes), you're good to run in Texas while you wait on the rest.

Do you have your own tags? If you do you can continue to work for the carrier that you are leased on to until your authority is active and then you go on your own.

OP, I was stuck running Texas intrastate for FIVE MONTHS while I was getting IRP and IFTA. It is not a fast process. But you can make it on Texas intrastate alone. It's harder, but it's doable.
