I'm looking to acquire a CDL class A.

    1. Is it possible to self study for the written portion (permit)?
    2. Then pay an instructor or experienced driver to practice for the driving test?
    3. Would it be possible to rent or use somebody else's truck for the test (as long as they have insurance etc)?
    4. Which state would be the best for doing this in?

I'm not looking to get into trucking as a career. It's needed for another career path (lineman, driving bucket trucks).

    G13Tomcat Thanks this.

Many practice tests on the web.
Check your local area i. e. craigslist for people or companies that rent gooseneck truck/trir combo solely for people to practice and take the CDL test.
In my area there is classaleasing.net
Minnesota CDL Truck Road Test And Testing- Class A Leasing

I did all the test before ever seeing the inside of a truck. The skills test is another story.
Think about the cost of a truck and translate it to a car.
Would you let someone with just a permit drive your Corvette around so they can learn to drive? What could go wrong? A good friend might but a O/O no way.
Find a cheap school or see if your company will pay it for you.

Too, a permit requires a fully licensed copilot.

The State used to provide a study book, I did mine that way, it’s been a long time ago. A local Dairy, would rent the Trucks, and give road test. They were always backlogged. Ended up using my Dads Company Truck. You might find one these days, but I think you should check local community colleges.Surprised the Company doesn’t pay for you to get it. Don’t you Guys have a Electrical Workers Union? Apprenticeship programs?

Thank you guys for all for the help. I appreciate it.
    I have a state manual.
To answer some of your questions.
The CDL is required because you might end up hauling poles. The majority of the time is spent driving bucket trucks though.
Some lineman schools do help you get the CDL, others help with the permit and many leave you get it yourself.
A lot of the schools and the community colleges have stopped their operations because of the corona virus. So that's why I was looking for an alternative.
Having the CDL seems to be a requirement to get an apprenticeship. It bumps your name up the list ahead of people who don't have it.

@G13Tomcat, the band has some great music to help you get pysched up! I hope your daughter is doing well. I picked it up from the ending of the latest Pirates of the Carribean movie. I figure it's a great username for this particular forum!
