i'll chime in here, i worked vfor shaffer for a year before i screwed it up lol great company. As far as orientation, if i recall there were two different types of orientation for me , one was like the prehire and then one after my 8 weeks with a trainer. THe first was in marietta and second was in lincoln. I got my own room on both occasions. The test involved in getting your medical card was very extensive. Carrying things down halls and up steps, very phyical but also very easy unless one is completly out of shape i guess. I'm out of shape and handeled it all ok. I think i had to get breakfast everyday but lunch was provided and one night i think they gave us gift cards for dinner. anyway, good luck to ya. again i thought they were a great company and still hang my head in shame for screwing it up although i'm finally back out on the road and with a small family owned company.. good luck

I am attending a school in PA called Schuylkill Technology Center. It is a PTDI approved school and Samantha Deliere Driver/ Student Recruiter from Shaffer in New Kingstown Pa came in today 7-2-13. Over the last few weeks we had recruiters from Warner, and a few locals come in and by far Shaffer is what got the whole class ( 8 people) attention. Between the pay scale and with a lot of local work ( because we have a Wal-mart freezer at the 119 off 81 they get contracts out of the place). Plus she mentioned that Shaffer just got a Hershey Food's account ( which again is within 50 miles of the school). Plus from what she has said is there is a lot of potential for really anyone. You can pull for Shaffer then after a period of time if you have your Hazmat you can go to Crete or if you would rather have experience in heavy haul you can pull oversize in their Hunt. And I believe this company would be a good company for myself as I want to get into hauling oversize (mobile homes) and without having experience no trucking company will hire you without oversize exp. So I guess my only real question here is anyone who has worked for Shaffer can you go to Crete or Hunt after a period of time or once you tell them which company you want to do with do you have to stay with that company. Also if your able to go with Shaffer and move over to Crete or Hunt do you start out as being a new hire or do you keep some kinda seniority[h=1][/h]?

littledoc, I drive for Shaffer and have for more than 10 years. I have never switched between any other division, but I have heard that you would have to qualify and get hired by Crete in order to switch. Hunt is different story, they are totally separate, so I assume you would have to go through their hiring process no matter what. I believe you keep seniority, but in the Crete/Shaffer system seniority means little. These are my assumptions, since I have never really checked...but have only heard that this is the way it is. Call in and ask the recruiter, I am sure they gave you a number to call.
As for the WalMart you mentioned, they run store deliveries there...you will do alot of NJ and Eastern PA. -
Thanks for the info. From what I got out of her is that people that go to the school choose the run the Walmart run's because they are home more often, close to home, and don't have to take the truck home as they can leave it at the Walmart terminal. Walmart is a no touch freight because they have there own loading and unloading people ( this includes all the stores). The way she said is they do Pa, NY, NYC, NJ. But some people that work for Shaffer don't like walmart after a period of time because of the paper work that walmart requires to be done. She said you get your check from Shaffer but basically work for walmart. If there is a problem with the load you report to walmart if there is a paper with the paper work you report to walmart. So there is not much contact with the actual company that you work for which I feel is BAD.

At the Walmart, Shaffer has an office there, with at least 4 people working there. You will deal with them daily and they are the ones that assign you the loads. I guess you actually get your delivery papers from the Walmart clerks and return the papers with proof of delivery to them, then a trip sheet goes to the Shaffer people. All your Qualcomm messages go to the Shaffer people in that office.
Also, I don't believe they do any NYC out of there anymore. When I did it for a week recently, it was not bad, but you do alot of NJ and Philly, at least I did...maybe they give better runs to those that are permanently assigned there....
