No, no they are not. Unless it's a sole proprietorship. And while I'm sure there are a few getting truckload loads, very, very few are.
Does it hurt the shipper? Sure, but nowhere near as much as stranding a driver 800 miles from home.
She did the right thing

yeah, but she has to live, you know, eat, and drink while on the road?
sure the shipper is caught up in this too, but frankly, screw them too, as it ain't my crap......
lousy attitude.??
perhaps, but one has to think of oneself first, over all others, as they ARE HOME, and i'd not be.....
self preservation rules over everything else.
true story, when i worked for a company that had the DHL contract, my run was from MA to Allentown PA 5 nights a week.
here's how stupid the company got with me..
i am on I-95 north, approaching the Wallingford scales....i get a call that my run was dropped..i asked when...company boss man said effective immediately.
i said ok, i will park the truck, since i don;t have a job, and get home on my own....screw the DHL crap.
took several seconds, dumb company boss man said, ok, look, take the load back home where it belongs, and we will work on the details to get you back on that run...
they took me seriously....and that very night...i was back on that route......
i ain't (or ever was) afraid to park and beat feet......
and i still got jobs.TheyCallMeDave, Gearjammin' Penguin, G13Tomcat and 3 others Thank this. -
In the late 80s I had a company bounce my last 2 checks and get pissy with me on the phone about it .
We ran on cash back then so I didnt bother picking up the next load in Plymouth ind instead putting just enough fuel in it to make it to south st Paul MN at stockman's.
Had a buddy pick me up and waited a few days to let them know where they're truck was ...they were pissed ! Lol.
They closed the doors about a week later .singlescrewshaker, Gearjammin' Penguin, G13Tomcat and 2 others Thank this. -
This seems to be a developing situation in more and more companies.
But, the driver's have to take some responsibility. And have a few bucks saved up or an emergency credit card available to get yourself out of this exact situation. Not having two nickles to rub together until the next payday is just plain stupid.Hammer166, spindrift, FlaSwampRat and 6 others Thank this. -
There is no way I'm driving around in a truck without insurance. Bobtail of not. No insurance, no pay, no way. The second I find out that the company is gone I would have parked the truck and trailer, let the truck stop know whats going on, call the shipper to tell them where to pick up their stuff. Document everything, grab my stuff call uber to take me to the nearest car rental place and drive home.
This is where the credit card is the most useful tool to take with you when you're over the road.FlaSwampRat, buddyd157, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this. -
Alot of these companies these days have the conscience of a snake and think nothing of leaving drivers stranded .
Hence the lack of loyalty from drivers these days .
If my company ever pulled that crap on me I'd dump their trailer without a second thought.FlaSwampRat, sevenmph, TheyCallMeDave and 1 other person Thank this. -
I’m just saying If I had a family to get to and my company goes under and leaves me out to dry, I’m going home. I’ll call the shipper and receiver and give them the route I’ll be taking they need to make arrangements to pick it up. Then I’m taking the truck as close to home as possible.
If I can’t get ahold of shipper or receiver I’ll drop it at a truck stop and again I’m heading home
Wouldn’t the insurance be valid until the end of the policy date? Even if not I’m sure you could get temporary insurance. Remember you can get insurance on any vehicle even if you don’t own it.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
Hurt the shipper? They were taking a chance using a low ball trucking company. There are ways to check on carriers, but all the shipper did was look at the price. They got what they paid for.
Now if the load was CHR or another big brokerage they have someone to go afterFlaSwampRat, magoo68, Western flyer and 1 other person Thank this. -
God forbid you get into an accident and kill Mom and her precious kids. Who will deal with the lawyers? You? The company does not exist anymore so it's on you. For me it's not worth it. The cost of a five day rental unlimited miles is less than $200. That's worth a piece of mind for me.Snailexpress, FlaSwampRat, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this.

and there-in lies the problem. how many times, right here on this website, do we read how dirt poor many people are and wanna be drivers making the big bucks?
as it is, they are living on sparse weekly pay from thier current job, most likely in debt up to thier eyeballs, and have a wife and 27 children to feed..
it's a poor lifestyle on thier part to begin with and looking for that pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow.
so now they get into trucking, still in even MORE debt, and no means of a way home, like a credit card.
we cannot feel too sorry for many of them, due to thier fiances, which they themselves dug thier own holes, and continue to dig deeper.
they have to find a way to get home, even if that means driving the truck bob-tail if need be to cut down on the weight and go further on a tank of diesel.
let's face it, there are hundreds of drivers every so often out there, that just have to man up and do it, rather than to cry on the shoulders of others, cuz, in all reality, what can we do..??
talk about it here, and that's about all we can really do.
cuz i ain't about to donate any money, to get someone home..harsh yes..??
hey, we all had to survive on our own, get our selves out of debt with little to no help.
a cold hard fact of life sometimes.FlaSwampRat, singlescrewshaker, Western flyer and 1 other person Thank this.
