I typically give the throwout bearing and cross shafts a couple shots every 2nd week. Don't want too much grease inside the bellhousing but you also gotta keep those moving parts lubricated too.

How can the pilot bearing be ruled out with the clutch out? It is a bearing after all. It turns with the engine even if the transmission is stopped. What am I overlooking?
-
Pilot bearing is pressed into the flywheel. With clutch pedal out, the flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch housing, clutch discs and input shaft all rotate at the same speed. Thus the pilot bearing does not rotate. Step on the clutch pedal and the input shaft and clutch discs stop rotating. Flywheel, pilot bearing and clutch housing still rotate. Pilot bearing has to spin because there's a speed variation between the flywheel and input shaft.SAR, Goodysnap and spsauerland Thank this.

Not sure what I was thinking when reading your post. Senior moment.

just little update on this.so after replacing with new clutch, new pilot bearing, cut flywheel, new mounts and rebuild transmission the rattle noise is gone

the shop tore down my old transmission and said the input shaft had excessive wear on it and the clutch pedal forks were wore out really bad. nothing major in the transmission it self.just normal wear.SAR, BoxCarKidd and SmallPackage Thank this. -
they charged you for a transmission rebuild? I hope not. That kit cost 250 bucks and easy to install when you do the clutch. Comes with new input shaft, input shaft bearing, clutch fork and clutch brake. and pilot bearing. its cheap insurance every time you replace the clutch. All those components dont require tearing into the transRoadking96 Thanks this.

Well before they weren’t sure what exactly is the issue.and they were week out before they could rebuild mine.so i just bought one they already had rebuilt ready to go.with tht many miles i figure its time..but i did all the labor my self so going with rebuild transmission worked out for my budget.about 6k in everything.i did everything while it had it down rear main seal, resealing engine bell housing.its oil leak free Detroit for now lol
