You shouldn't avoid downshifting..EVER..when empty just learn how to skip shift both going up and down..

If I'm loaded then like I said I downshift all the time. Even from 5th to 4th and to 3rd.

THIS IS A QUICK WAY TO FAIL THE TEST
THIS IS SOMETHING YOU DO IN YOUR OWN TRUCK IF YOU CHOOSE.
The reason for this is that you always have to be in gear for the test or they will instantly fail you. Just do things the way the school has taught you and you will be fine.LaBubba, DrtyDiesel and American-Trucker Thank this. -
May I interject my funny story about downshifting in a regular 4 wheeled vehicle?
I was riding with my husband one day, and I had just then noticed that he'd push and hold the clutch in while coming to a stop, yet go from 5th, to 4th, to 3rd, to 2nd. I thought "well, maybe it was just some sorta one time thing" and sat and further observed him doing it over, and over, and over.
Finally, I asked him what he was doing. Why on earth would he go down through the gears if he's not going to pull out the clutch each time? He said "That's called downshifting.". I'm like "Uh, no it's not". He said that he could pull out the clutch each time, to slow the vehicle, but he was taking the easy way and just coasting to a stop. I'm like "That's all well and good, but why are you moving the shifter through the gears while doing it. Furthermore, why not just put it in neutral and skip holding down the clutch?". He said you HAD to go down through the gears like that.
So, after a good hour of me trying to convince him he was on crack, we finally got the opinions of others. To this day, I'm in awe at him doing such a thing, and him insisting he was right about the whole ordeal.
I love my husband, and he's normally the smartest person in any room, but gawd, that was just silly.Hammer166 and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
Rolling in neutral is a bad idea. Yeah, most of us have done it a time or two but dont get into the habit of that.
As far as shifting, i float the 13 speed i drive. 2x clutch rarely and only if needed. I find im a lot smoother floating. And smooth means let wear and tear. -
Fixed..... No more double post

My trainer was an o/o so he taught me a lot of things to do to save fuel. Its a miniscule amount saved but it adds up over time.
