As a former instructor, I would get students who would 'forget" to raise or lower the selector for the low or high side, and would think they're in 5th when actually they were in 10th.

Why don't you practice without the double clutching? You should be able to feel the gears. As
long as you don't jam the stick in, you won't hurt the tranny.

First, adjust your seat so that you have to really stretch inorder to get the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. This will help eliminate you activating the clutch brake. You only press the clutch all the way to the floor when the truck is totally stopped and motionless.
    .
.For example: You are currently in 3rd gear and want to shift to 4th gear. Slowly increase your rpm's to 1300 and begin your shift. You use half clutch to put the transmission into neutral. Release the clutch. Say the word -- Delaware. You use half clutch and put the transmission into 4th gear. Release the clutch and drive. If you start your shift at 1300 rpm in 3rd gear, you should get it into 4th gear without grinding by approximately 1,000 rpm. Do not change the speed that you shift.
    .
.If you are grinding the gears and the rpm is higher than 1,000rpm, then you need a slightly longer word like Oklahoma. If you are grinding the gears and the rpm is below 1000 rpm, then you need a shorter word like Georgia. The word you use is not at all magical. It is just a simple method of timing your pause so that you can reliably and repetitively shift without grinding. Hope this is usefull to the original poster.

Went from a 13 speed in a 93 Volvo (The little red slider made me a fool at first), to a 10 speed Mercer on my 01 freight. Felt like I was just learning to drive again. Just takes time and some practice. In a couple of weeks you will be able to laugh about it.

Should you be shifting every gear at the same rpm's? Adjusting a little higher for uphill and little lower rpms for downhill. Will that help with the timing whether using the clutch or not using the clutch? I find I have more trouble shifting low range gears than high range....downshifting is still a nightmare too, but I keep trying to get better everyday, not like another post I've seen where someone is tired of shifting...All I want to do is keep shifting and getting better everyday, I like what i do and want to learn as much as I can from vetran drivers..Thanks
