Im currently in driving school(NTTS), and we haven’t started shifting yet. Just 1st gear and reverse for backing and obviously pulling forward.

What is some advice from you experienced drivers when we our road rides in? Obviously the instructor will be in the truck but just looking for advice from you guys also.

Just starting out since you will be empty in a training truck shift at real low rpm until you hit 4th or 5th, it will glide into dear without having to match rpm. Don't push the clutch to the floor like a car, just push it in a few inches and it will slow everything down enough for the shift. The only time I put it to the floor it going into 1st or reverse.

Thanks. Funny putting it in 1st and letting foot off clutch, it’s like the truck jumps, acts like it’s going to fly and then creeps along lol

All I can do is show you a favored shifting video. IF you relax... (DO NOT STRESS....) you will notice the instructor is 4 steps ahead of the student and is not concerned overly. Student does the learning by doing on a small hill. 5% for a few miles, just enough to stir the juices...

Larimae hill, where Abe Lincoln is watching east of the city.

Sometimes, you have a roaring winter storm down there or up here in the top of it.

Get that 6th high before the drop coming up fast.. scratch scratch scratch.

The pace of shifting is much slower than you may think. Whether a 4 beat or 2 heart beats 1, 2, 3, 4 clutch, neutral, clutch, gear. Bom bom, bom bom. Trying to speed shift will kill ya every time. You can always play with the rpms and gear choice. Panic = grinding...

Slower is faster. I know that doesn't make sense, but what the moral of the story is that timing is everything.

If the truck is jumping alot while shifting it's because you are giving it too much fuel. You won't have to give any fuel when you first start out. Specially if trailer is empty.

IMO, you scan shift a 10spd pretty fast. I mean "floating". in the lower gears you hardly need to wait, it goes in almost as fast as you can put in in gear, almost. As you get higher in the gears the delay between gears increases.
7-8-9th gear you probably need to wait a second or less...

if you have trouble, try shifting faster.

Either that or they're dumping the clutch. Learning to feather it properly is what smoothed out my starts in 1st
